Jefferson Collectors - Are there any 1939P Reverse of 1938 Jeffersons in full steps?

The PCGS pop report doesn’t help. All the coins certified prior to the identification of Type 1 & 2 are listed as “reverse of 38s” in the pop report.

As an example, the current PCGS pop report (1939P reverse of 1938 in MS67FS) shows a pop of 17 but most (if not all?) of these are probably Type 2. In April 2002 the pop report had 14 before PCGS started distinguishing between Type 1 & 2 steps. Here have not been many new additions in 7 months.

I have not seen any 1939P reverse of 1938 with the full step designation for sale.

Are there any out there?

  • Frank,

I beleive that there probably are some 39P R38 FS Jeffersons but they may not (yet) be in PCGS holders. I
would rank the 38-39PDS T1 coins in FS as follows: 39P, 39D, 39S/38S, 38D, 38P. By far, the hardest to
obtain will probably be the 39P T1. Also, I beleive there are more T2 FS coins than T1. But that may change
based on how "loose" PCGS is w/FS for T1 coins.

Here's one but it's not in the coveted PCGS holder.

Another real nice Jefferson. This is the 1st type 1 1939P in full steps that I have seen. Any duplicates that look like the one above?

  • Leo, I remember when you had the 53-S up on e-Bay, any chance of you posting it again? BTW, how long have you been at it? Did you buy old-time collections or find these piecemeal one at a time? -mark-

This is the 1st type 1 1939P in full steps that I have seen.

Yes but will it cross? Frank, I'm aware of 4 others and seen one of them. The other problem is if they
were PAK quarter step graded. I thought Ray Overby would have one. David sold some type ones on TT
but the 39-D was PAK counted.

Don't tell me your interested in it for $125K. LOL Early 1990's, Frank and Ray are bigger nickel nuts.
Adolf Weiss, Bern Nagangast, Bill Fivas, Ken Chilynski, Jim Ragsdale, Charlie Adkins, Steve Kent, Ray and many others have contributed to my collection. Just meeting and talking with these people are greater treasures then the coins themselves.

    I have all the 1938 and 1939 Type 1 & 2 in full steps except the 1939P type1. The 38D S, 39D Type 1 &2, 39P Type 2 are all MS67FS. The 38P 39s Type 1 &2 are MS66FS. If you see one available let me know.

    Thanks Frank

    Hey guys
Maybe you saw this in the other forum but I recently picked this up at my local coin shop for 75 cents.
