With it about 90% sure that Rick M is gone...

and there in my opinion is noone more conservative in their grading then him, does this mean NGC's standard will rise a tad or PCGS standard with slip a tad? Or is it too late for NGC to "unring" the bell as far as a major standard shift is concerned. I speak with mostly semi-modern (1930-1970) experience, of course. And that experience tells me that NGC definitely has a differing standard, whether it be proof or ms coinage.

Also, if you feel that the standards will change at all, does this mean that the market $$$ for either will change...significantly, slightly, etc.

I guess the only thing I end up asking when someone brings up "standards" is: Why is being more conservative important? Isn't "consistancy" what matters most in the long term?

    Morris,

I don't know who will influence whom, but currently the market seems really splintered. Nothing is more damaging to a collector than changing standards. If you believe in plastic in the first place, you are paying for grading consistency. All of the major services seem to drift. My current dilema is as follows: I just finished a nice MS Ike set, nothing spectacular, but all clads in MS65, and all silvers in MS67. I looked at the set, and the holders are different ages. Several of the older MS65 coins look lots worse than some of my more recent submissions that graded MS64. I'm not interested in selling my collection, so I'm interested in correctly graded coins, and don't want an over/undergrade. Knowing I will keep the set, should I buy older MS66 coins where needed to make the set uniform? Should I crack them all out and send them to NCS for a no-grade holder and lose my grading fees? After all, I know how I grade them. Should I send the coins for crossover to NGC? They generally aren't as respected with Ikes, but they do have nice airtite holders, and I believe they grade very well as of late. Is expecting a little consistency too much to ask? That is after all what I'm hoping for when I submit. Which coin represents the "correct" grading standard?

BTW - This isn't applicable to just PCGS.
