sounds like a good idea, however if he is very small, watch he doesnt put them in his mouth, and choke on them, if he is just starting to read, buy him a red book.......buy him the red book anyway, he can look at the pictures.

My grandson, soon 5, likes "Big Money". He gets Ikes and Kennedys. The latter you should be able to get from the bank at face if you are persistant enough. You should be able to pick up Ikes for $1.25 - $1.50 each in circ grade.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

I bought some "Select BU" $10 gold pieces from Paul Sims, and they were overgraded. Probably a lot of their high-end raw stuff is. (I would venture a guess that the same is true for many of those dealers who run double-full-page spreads in the major coin magazines- they have to pay for those slick ads some way!)

I would not buy expensive coins from Paul Sims or any other dealer, raw and sight-unseen. If you must buy sight-unseen through the mail, insist on coins certified by a reputable grading service.

However, on low-end certified material, they might be just fine. If the price is right, go for it. In all my dealings with them, they shipped quite fast and were fair about refunding my money when I returned the coins.

  • give him a worn morgan! big, round, easily find able, cheap, heavy, and un-bendable (unless your son has a hammer and a vice)

  • Kids will get more out of foreign coins with their multitude of designs and sizes and shapes than they will with US coins. They can be bought dirt cheap, and the kids can handle them all they want without harming them. If they lose some as well, so what?
As the child develops a collecting interest, get him started on a series like buffalo nickles in circulated condition.

  • PM me. I inherited some worn coins, don't know what to do with them, don't know how to grade them, don't know jack. Would love someone who knew what they were to share them with a good kid. I will share with you for free. That way you won't feel ripped.
