Grading Consistency

Sure you can. Just grade my cards accurately and your cards consistently inaccurately. Whether your cards or anyone else's are graded accurately or consistently, I couldn't care less. I just want mine graded accurately. When I start paying for your submissions (when pigs fly), I'll change my opinion on that.image

    thebobs,
I will attempt to do close up scans this weekend. Because the problems lie on the corners its really tough to see unless under a 10x mag or a close up. I'll try my best. I will be bringing them to Ft Washington in Dec for anyone who wants to see them in person.

I for one would love to see these cards. If I attend the show, which I may, I would look forward to meeting you too.

I still believe that this is a management issue more than a grading issue. There should be 3 graders looking at the cards and for some reason, I firmly believe that this is not happening. And what direction are they given (The graders) regarding the grading of cards??

There is no doubt in my mind that over the past few months that grading standards have changed in different direction more than once. I have noticed and it seems to me that numerous other collectors have noted the same. I hear it from dealers too. I don't know what is going on. Joe Orlando seems like a nice enough guy. I spoke with him at the National and he seems very easy going and enjoyed my chat with him. I know he writes very interesting articles for the SMR and I love his book that he just authored. But maybe the time has come for him to put his pen down and pay a bit more attention to the ball.

More than likely, this post has been reviewed by the PSA folks.....It will be interesting to see if something, or nothing is said about these issues.

And speaking of issues, this is exactly why I am sitting on 2 baseball card sets that I originally earmarked for the registry. As a relatively new person in the graded arena, I first must feel comfortable in my abilites to appropriately grade, and THEN trust my findings to a third party such as PSA with the hopes of consistent standards. "Hopes?" I don't want to pay for a service to "hopefully" get consistency! So, for now, I may just keep these sets raw.

Please note too that I'm not throwing darts at PSA, but based on my own experiences and the views of others, I do question spending my money on what seems to be very subjective and inconsistently applied standards.

Are there other folks, seasoned or not, who share my feelings about leaving their sets raw for the above reasons? Would just like to know if I have some company in the "Keeper of Raw Set" catagory, at least for now.

  • BOTR,
Great post. Couldn't have said it better. $5-10 bucks per card for someone to get it wrong the first time is too much on a .50 cent card. For the most part, my best remains raw. I typically buy the cards already graded for my graded set. My raw set has been cherry picked over several years of vending case and rack box searches. You have company, no doubt about it. Many other members on this very board and I have discussed privately, simply doing the stuff raw, period. There's a lot of unhappy campers where consistency is concerned. I don't believe the problem is terminal, however, and I will take a wait and see approach...the cards aren't going anywhere and I know what I have.

    downgoesfrazier,

I'd like to discuss raw set storage with you. I'm contemplating an interesting idea (to keep mint cards mint) and would like your opinion............please PM me.

    Thanks, BOTR
