Chris R. is not exclusive to 1971, he is a fellow collector (thorn) for 1970 as well as other 70's years. I know I will be watching how high he is willing to go on this card. If he does win it, will he have the bank roll to continue (short term) on his buying spree. Fighting for scrapps has become to much of the norm.
Chris, what happened to your 1970 set? Did you rename it or did you hide it?
In any case, hope it is progressing well.
Collector of baseball PSA sets from the 1970's & hockey rookie cards; big New York Rangers fan (particularly now that they are sleeping with the enemy with Holik and Kaspiritus). Also starting to collect 53 Bowman Color as I think they are the most beautiful cards I have seen.
my 70 set was removed, i made such a mess of it at home (hiding cards from the wife in to many places) i felt it would be easier for me to start from the beginning. i had cert numbers of cards that i had sold, cert numbers missing. i will put it back up in January. my organization skills have always been my downfall.
I'm guessing that the reserve is @ $5,000. Anyone disagree? I imagine that there may be at least one or two major player out there who would be in snipe mode for a card like this. We shall see!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
Chris K, good luck on the set in the beginning of the year. I just moved homes and it gave me an opportunity to actually sort out my sets a bit and figure out where I had duplicates. I hope to get the Rose but I will not go out of control as I could use the same funds (if the reserve is ridiculously hi) to buy some unopened material which I seem to enjoy more than just getting one card. Thanks for the compliments on the sets. 75 mini and 78 are going along pretty well as I open up some of the unopened boxes that I have, whereas I think that I have had bad lcuk on my first submission of 79's as I was too lax on my top-bottom centering standards.
Mike, I think the reserve is higher than 5k and I am sure people will snipe.
All the best
Chris

Marc, check it out today. It probably won't go any higher.Do ya think?.....
Sheesh,it's a nice card but if I had $6000 to spend on one card I think I'd be shopping for a 52T Mantle.
Anyway,I wonder if this buyer is a set builder? It would be nice to see someone put a card like this in their set, however,I could understand why somone would keep a card like this in hiding.
As a Rose collector, I would love to have that card. I agree with RobE however - 6K would go towards a 52 Mantle and with the rest I would buy a PSA 9 Rose.
Yo Robert - is the high bidder ever gonna register a Rose set????
Congratulations, Chris, on an amazing addition to your set!

Good question Neal. At this point, there are probably a couple Rose collectors who could arguably take over the top spot ... I'm sure it's only a matter of time!
Back to convincing myself that Koy Detmer can go 4-2 over the home stretch
Maybe some of you 1970 experts could help me.....how does the back of the card look to you. Is it inline with most 1970's PSA 10's or is it more of a PSA 9 back. Is this card so rare that it will hold its $7k purchase price?
I wondered that myself John but many PSA 10s I've seen face to face have not always had Perfect centering on the rear of the card which bothered be at first until I looked at the allowance for a PSA 10 on the websight. However,It would be great to see a better scan of that card.I would think that if the back it nice and straight(no tilts) then it is acceptable but that's just me.
From an outsider's perspective, it is tough to say. I believe I know the individual who has the other 1970 Topps Pete Rose PSA 10 card. The card sold for a pretty high multiple of PSA 9 -- but Rose cards tend to have a different set of rules. Rose has a very strong contingent of deep-pocketed collectors who will pay very aggressively for many of his cards. It seems like most of the Rose PSA 10's that sell often sell through private channels. There are quite a few Rose cards that have not seen the public light in many years -- and this may be the last time in a while that a 1970 Topps Rose PSA 10 hits the market. The card has a large enough population in PSA 9 to support a critical mass.
The tougher Rose card from the set is #458. Though All-Star cards don't typically command high prices -- that card has yet to exist in PSA 9 -- and may be a sleeper if and when a 9 gets graded and hits the auction block.
The back centering on the card certainly is far from perfect -- but it is forgivable in my mind. There are so few PSA 10's as it is -- if you start being super-strict about back-centering, too, a PSA 10 card will be more of an anomaly than it is currently. With 1970 Topps, as it is, PSA 9's outnumber 10's on a rate of approximately 98 to 1.

I have a number of 10's from 1970 and there is not perfect back centering on any of them. Of course I would have preferred to pay less than 7k for the card but this is my main set that I am collecting and it will certainly be the centerpiece of this set. All of the other 10's are really commons. I am not so worried about whether it will exactly hold its value (although I agree with Mike, there is probably not another of these to come around at all or not for some time) but I do not think it will lose much value if any; furthermore, I did not purcahse the card for an investment but to be the nicest card in my main set that I am collecting from my birth year. If I get some time over the next few days I will scan in the backs from some of my other 10's from 1970.

Congrats on a really nice looking card. I hope you have much success in building your set. I'm sure it will be a nice one and a true treasure to display.
No doubt....Congratulations on the purchase. Thanks for shedding some light on the subject in regards to the other 10's you own and how the "Rose" back compares. I was not sure how the back compared so I wanted to ask the experts. That is one heck of a card you just bought. Maybe Im a bit anal retentive when it comes to the backs...let alone on a $7k 1970 Rose card. Regardless that is one amazing card.
Best of luck with your 70 set and the rest of the 70's sets you are working on,
Congratulations on passing me for the #1 spot on the registry. I knew it was just a matter of time. Great Rose card last night. I'll trade you two complete '70 Topps ungraded sets for it (just kidding)! Have you calculated the highest possible GPA for the set? I haven't done it yet and I know the one listed on the registry is incorrect (8.20). Why doesn't PSA ever update the Highest GPA?
Congratulations again and good luck in completing the set.
BJ had informed me that PSA will only update the highest possible GPA once a year. I know that they do it more often than that -- but there is no automated mechanism currently available to re-computer the highest possible GPA after each update of the population report...

Chris - nicely done on the Rose. I had a feeling you would end up with it. I agree with you on the centering of the 1970's backs. The couple of 10's I have are not perfect either. They are still nice to look at. I'll see you at the top.
Lizard - great to hear from you. I was wondering how long you would keep quiet. It's good to see a 1970 thread stick around. I'm sure we will be crossing paths more and more as we all get closer to the goal.
That is an amazing card. I have 4 to send in for grading now. No possible 10s, but 1 has a shot at a 9. This is a particular facorite of mine since I collect Rose and the 1970 set. I competely understand that the 1971 black border cards are a tough set, but 1970 is pretty difficult as well. It is also amazing the difference between the front and backs as far as centering on these cards. You can get one or the other, but not both. Good luck on completing the set. I will get there eventually, but without the 10s and not too many 9s either.

Looking for 77 cloth 9s and 10s. 54 Red Hearts and now 64 Stand ups
Virtualizard - thank you for the nice words; although I have not exactly calculated the highest GPA for this set, my gut feeling is that it is somewhere around 8.6. hris K, looking forward to seeing you back on the list in the new year.
Now the fun part begins, trying to find the last cards you need for the set - probably means going to shows and going through some common books, as the supply of cards on EBAY and from dealers that I need seems to be getting smaller.
Good luck to everyone else.

As of today's pop report, the best possible 1970 Topps set is 8.83.
The best possible includes:
25 different cards graded PSA 10 512 different cards graded PSA 9 179 different cards graded PSA 8 and good luck finding #2 Diego Segui, #84 Paul Casanova, #176 Jim Ray Hart and #536 Mike Kekich where the best card graded is still only a PSA 7!

I'm sure it's not that hi of a priority, but I'd think it would be pretty easy to do it. After all, I could probably load the pop and the weights into a simple excel spreadsheet, and just create IF/THEN statements to have the weights multipled by the proper grades.
I was going to run a set to check it out, but for some reason my pop report access isn't working...
I believe the best possible rating is weighted, so you can't just add up 8s/9s/10s...
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
In a nutshell... the formula for the Finest Possible Grade for the set is the "highest grade" for every card in the set. So, if the best Mike Kekich (#536) is PSA 7 - (no 8's) then the grade is 7. Pete Rose is obviously 10 based on how this thread started and so on.
Multiply the highest grade for one of each card by its weight - creates "A". Add up all of the "A"s - creates "Total A".
Add up all of the weights for one of every card in the set - creates "B". Divide "Total A" by "B" giving you the Finest Possible Grade for the set.
If a card hasn't been graded - make sure that the corresponding grade and weight in the calculations equal 0.
This calculation is the 2 minute drill version. I don't want to get into how variations can impact this....
Frank Bakka Sets - 1970, 1971 and 1972 Always looking for 1972 O-PEE-CHEE Baseball in PSA 9 or 10!
Just checked out the '70 Topps Registry and they have updated the finest possible GPA. Frank was correct and it is 8.83 (or they just took his word for it and listed it there). I looked at a couple of the other years that I'm not as familiar with and I think they have been updated as well. Is this a coincidence or is someone listening and that quick to act on it?
If anyone is interested, I have excel spreadsheets to keep track of GPA for 1969-1975 Topps Baseball. All you have to do is enter your grades in the corresponding cells and it calculates % Complete, Weighted GPA, Set Rating, and # of Cards (if you have a qualifier, make sure to subtract 2 points). I'm sure a lot of you have created your own, but email me at jeb@virtualizard.com if you are interested in any of these and I'll send you a copy.
They have not reset them all yet... I know that a month ago I set up a spreadsheet and calculated the 1964 Topps Baseball to be 8.88 (the registry shows 8.72). I suppose I should update my spreadsheet and let BJ know what the correct value is. Sounds like something to work on this evening...
