Is this a california proof morgan?

From some of the pictures I've seen this looks like a candidate.

(California proof coins are mercury dipped. Cameo is created with fingernail polish that is removed after the dipping by acetone)

I need to move to California because the DMPLs don't look like that where I live.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I,d like to hear what Dog has to say about this one.
I really don`t know enough about DMPL or PL Morgans to comment, but yall know that won`t stop me from
    giving my uninformed opinion..so I,ll go out on a limb and say..Its doctored.Artifical mirrors.etc....
To really know that though, you,d really have to get a 10x loupe on it to say for sure.Maybe not even then, unless your a top grader at one of the big 3 (PCGS,NGC,ANACS)
Do the reeds along the egde look alittle flat to be what seller claims it to be..IE; BU?

    DOH!!! There he is....image
  • The coin looks to shiny and mirror like surfaces to be real. Just my opinion image
Found a circulated 1903 0 Morgan to complete my Morgan dollar collection!!
  • I’m grateful for this post. The coin in the link looks a lot like a coin that I bought in an ACG MS64 holder. Now I know why it wouldn’t cross to PCGS. Well, at least I can say that I have an example of a “California proof” Morgan dollar! I guess the mercury dissolves some of the metal on the surface, giving it a mirrored appearance. Pretty tricky...

Does the mirrored fields look pitted in areas under a loupe?Dog had mentioned this could be a sign of artifical mirrors.

No, I don't think that coin is a 'California Proof'. It looks like a normal 85-P PL coin and a not so good pic. California proofs usually had heavier frosting on the devices and didn't have all the small abrasions and frost breaks on Libertys cheek and the reverse.

Of the very few California proofs I've seen a long time ago, most were already somewhat cameo PL coins that were buffed in the fields and had frost painted on the devices, some were actually done quite well and were really attractive.
