The only thing special about that 1907 Liberty nickel is that it holds the record for the most overgraded coin in any slab, and Anaconda is using it in the auction to get people to see all slabs aren't equivalent.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Kingcoin is still trying to pass that coin off as a MILLION dollar oddity? He should try putting himself on the block. image

  • Kranky: I see what you mean about being over graded.I'm sure you have better looking coins than that piece of S---. How in the h--- can that be MS67. 3 points away from being perfect, aint no way.If that's what they call MS67 I have a couple hundred coins I should send in.

  • I just pulled out an 1899 liberty I should send out for grading.

Hey! Let's be fair. The nickel's an obvious mistake.

By Accucrap standards, it never should have been better than an MS66! image

The 1907 Nickel is just a joke. The holder originally had another coin in it. It was purchased by a dealer in the Dallas area and he replaced the original coin with this circ coin. Accugrade didnt grade that coin a 67. The coin is just a good. Accugrade isn't even that bad even though they are scum pigs.

Not that I can see the slab to tell...

But how can a dealer replace the coin in the holder without causing severe damage to the holder that would be obvious?
  • krankykranky Posts: 8,709 ✭✭✭
Hmmm, if someone switched the coin in that holder, that bothers me.

I'll ask the guy who took it out but I think he had several coins he was breaking out and used two halves that didn't crack to make one holder. You can do that with ACG holders. You can't do it with NGC,PCGS or most other holders.

It was never meant to be sold or anything. They just did it to be funny. No one expected it to be up on ebay for $1,000,000.
  • nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
Hmm, I can see the obvious humor and an obvious lawsuit if they did it! Unfortunate, too, as that coin should grade at least AU-55.314159
  • krankykranky Posts: 8,709 ✭✭✭
I didn't think anyone would do that so they could try to sell it to an unsuspecting buyer. It's just that I think doing that (even as a joke) and having it viewable by people who don't know it was a fabrication undermines any legitimate criticism of a grading outfit. But I would understand if it was supposed to be something to be shown around to people who would instantly understand the joke.

The guys who did it assumed anyone who saw it would know it's a joke. They gave it to another dealer who gave it to Adrian. I agree that now that the coin is being viewed by people who wouldn't get the joke it's time to retire the coin.
  • The 1907 looks G - VG. This is a joke.. everyone knows ACG is!!

    Kranky,

Agreed. Anaconda has just provided Hager something he can point to and claim that their reputation for lousy grading has no basis because, after all, well-known dealers are offering rigged slabs in an effort to damage ACG. Very stupid move.

  • The grading companies need to have a serious re-design of their slabs if it is easy enough to replace coins. Their credibility is shot.
  • I really wanted to buy Anaconda's coin but then I remembered all of the advice I have received over the years about not falling for paying high prices based on condition rarity. I guess I'm gonna hold out for true rarity instead. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • Better be careful with that. I think it falls under the category of "libel".

Do you see his other auction. What a range from $1 million to .01 cent. I surprised he isn't asking $1 million for the pin, its as rare as his die cracks!

An altered slab huh? Honestly I thought it was just a mechincal error. Reckon ACG's lawyers will send sneakysnake a threatening lawsuit letter? image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Kincoin actually sent me an e-mail the other day. At least I'm assuming it was him. I think he's a bit torqued that I put him on Troll Island.

Since he's a lawyer himself, I'm sure he must have considered - and dismissed - that as a concern prior to listing the coin.

  • The fact that this could be an altered slab, rather than a mechanical error certainly has the ability to snowball past the merely funny stage.

I believe a letter to the editor of CoinWorld magazine on November 11 by fellow board member Keith Dagen cites this same coin when it says:

"At a show three weeks ago in Dallas, a dealer handed me a coin slabbed by Accugrade as Mint State 67. The coin was a Liberty Nickel. Looking at the piece, the coin would grade Good 4 by American Numismatic Association standards, as the coin's details were worn that deep."

I'm sure Keith would never have made such a statement if he thought that this coin was not the original one that came with the slab. And as inconsistent as ACG may be in their grading, it' not right that they get slammed in a major trade magazine as a result of a prank. (if that's what, in fact, it is)
  • Some of you guys are so silly. I can just see the headlines now....."ACG gains in market acceptance due to Anaconda's Accugrade listing...."

Truth of the matter is, I've received well over 100 emails from collectors thanking me for that listing. I've also received many phone calls from new collectors enquiring about the content. It's been a small yet positive thing for the collecting community. In Baltimore, I saw a print out of the auction in a dealer's case - he used it to strike up conversations with new collectors to educate them about Accugrade.

So, for those of you whose sphincters constrict your windpipe, you might just want to try not criticizing every thing you see because quite frankly, you are in no position to accurately assess things going on outside your, shall we say, areas of familiarity.

That's a funny line about sphincters constricting the windpipe. I'll have to remember that. Ever say that to a judge?

I think your auction has good intentions but think the point would be more powerful using a coin that had been actually slabbed by them. Saw a 1907 $10 Indian the other day in a MS-67 holder that had not only been cleaned but had a filed rim. Something like that would be perfect. Anyway if your auction stops people from overpaying for that junk it's a good thing.

Gotta go and take care of my twitching sphincter which does not reside in my throat.

  • What credible person says it wasn't slabbed by them?
  • braddickbraddick Posts: 23,972 ✭✭✭✭✭
Adrian, has this ACG slab been tampered with? No judgement on my part, just curious.
I have a PCI slab that when I cracked, it fell perfectly apart at the seam. I had a "1972-S MS70" Ike insert I used and placed a beat up XF40 1972-S Ike in the holder. Superglued the two together and now have a fun conversation piece.

So, is the Accugrade slab a mechanical error (insert) or not?

    peacockcoins

  • Adrian, I may be one of the silly ones, but I think the coin is so far from a 67 that it actually loses the intended impact. When I saw your auction, for the first time, I immediately thought it was a mechanical error (something that ALL grading services make from time to time.) Now if the coin were actually somewhere between EF and AU, then the possibility of it being a legitimate ACG grade would be more likely.

I had not even thought about the possibility of it being an altered slab, until the Numish mentioned it here.

Btw, I have no love for ACG and no real reason to defend them. My only ACG purchase was a 1925-S Buffalo nickel that they graded MS-61, and when I went to sell it, could only get EF money for.
