About Coin Grading

Hello,
Can anyone explain me in detail about the grading of coins. How can i find that the coin is MS 65 or MS 64. How that its a proof set. Good, VG, fine can be guessed but how about others. I see some say EF-12 how they get to know that. Does there any web page that explains in detail about this.
I am learning about USA coins. So these grading is a must when i want to know more about them.

Bye,
Nanda

Other than the descriptons you can find on the pcgs site it's pretty much just looking at a lot of coins in different ms grades and comparing them.
A place with a many coins and good pictures is www.heritagecoin.com
    That should get you started.

There are (3) very good books you need to get, that ezplains it quite well.First is Photograde.Second is the PCGS Gradeing and counterfiet detection.Last but certainly not least is the ANA gradeing standards.Check your Public Library first. Then go to a book store. The pictures posted on this board should help also. The knowledge here is first rate.If you are able to post pictures or scans, most here will give an opinion.I hope this helps.

There is no web site that gives you the detailed descriptions your after.Even after reading the books, you'll have to look at a lot of coins to get good at it.Even those of us who've been at it for years still make mistakes. That is why most of us oldtimers specialize in one series and get good at it.There are very few collectors that are good at gradeing more than a couple of series.

  • Nanda,

Here's a link to another forum members website ( I can't remember who) that has some good information on coin grading.

IN addition to what everyone has said already, the best technique is to keep looking at mint state coins and asking dealers and others to explain why it grades the way it does. The ANA has a grading video, too, which can help to understand some nuances of grading.

This is another site from a member, I forget who. I have not checked it in detail but find it has some good info.
