using someone else's picture

With all the recent treads regarding people who use other's pictures in eBay auctions, I thought I'd ask this question. I recently won an auction for a coin and received the coin yesterday. I usually save the pictures off the auction page to make sure I get the correct coin.

I want to include this coin in my PCGS Registry Set, along with a picture as a lot of people do. However, my picture taking skills are not that great yet, and my pictures are a lot worse than the one I saved from the auction. My question, is it wrong to use the picture off the auction page for the Set Registry, now that I own the coin?

    I say use it as long as you don't link to the other persons web space.

    ask the seller cause it would be stored at his web page or would have been posted by him to a host site. i'm sure someone will post what the legal and ethical guidelines are.

    the biggest problem is actually "leeching" bandwidth. If you saved the pic of the coin you bought, and arent using the sellers internet host to show the pic on the web, I dont see a problem.

    I saved the picture off his website, so I won't be using his bandwidth, etc...

    Geoman,

    I see no problem with it. You own the coin, and the scan will reside on PCGS's servers. Many of the scans in the reg sets are ones that came from the original auction or dealer for the coins.

  • unless the picture is copywrited why would there be a question anyway?

    The photograph is automatically copyrighted under the domain of intellectual property. If you want to use someone else's photography it would be best to ask. There is no need to post a copyright notice with a photo unless the copyrighter asks that it be done when a second party is using it, the original owner's copyright is an understood. Just because you own the coin in the photo does not by any means entitle you to any rights to likenesses of that coin.

    I agree with coppercoins, although imo the seller would be a twit if he/she fails to give you permission if you ask nicely. Right and don't steal bandwidth; just copy and store on a server that lets you legally use bandwidth.
