Kinda OT - Currency Obsevations

I wonder if any of you, like me, notice peculiar things about the currency that circulates in your area. Like when I lived in Portland, it seemed as though $10 bills never really circulated. Buy something for $5 and pay with a $20 and 9 times out of 10, you got three fives back. Now that I live in Seattle, they have tens, but is seems like far more of the old style bills circulate here. It seems like a third to a half of the fives and tens I get are older ones, I've even received an old $20 from change at the grocery store. Haven't seen one of those in a couple years. Do any of you notice odd patterns of currency circulating where you live?

  • Ya, the cops just busted a counterfeiting ring here. Probably won't be much odd currency again for a while.

I was a cashier in the Seattle area until I moved here (Connecticut) a few months ago. Tens always were much scarcer than fives but old currency was no problem to come by. I don't know why, but customers always had plenty of 20's and 5's but never 10's, like they hoarded them or something. Wierd.
  • I would think it depends largely on what the local ATM's are handing out. Which depends on people's spending and banking habits. Probably also has to do with the number of atm's, ave distance to each, etc. Just a thought. Where I live 100's are most popular followed by 10's. Then again, we have 1 & 5 dollar coins (equivilent)...Tokyo.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
