Ike dollar mystery. Detectives sought!

I recently purchased the following Ikes on Ebay.

-1394462352 1978D PCGS-MS65 paid. $26.88
-1394462327 1978 PCGS-MS65 paid. $37.64

Here is the mystery.

PCGS daily price guide is $175 and $145 respectively.
Numismedia is $28 and $25 respectively.

Is it possible that the Ike market is in such flux that the discrepency in Numismedia is accounted for
by raw coins, and there also must be a much wider gap between PCGS and other services when it
comes to grading Ikes, or is that Numismedia takes an average of prices realized from Teletrade, where
the results are tainted by ICG and ANACS, who are far more liberal on Ikes than PCGS and NGC?

I thought that this was very curious.

Happy collecting,
Brian.

The PCGS price guide is way high on those. I think the much scarcer MS66s don't go for too much over the prices you quoted (a 78-P in MS66 went for 200 recently)

Editted to add... that was a nice price on the 78-D though!

Nice buys...............if I would have seen those, I would have been all over them also. image I think IKE's are really down right now. I just bought a 1972-S Silver MS67 for under $20. More than 50% lower than the daily price guide.

I have always wondered the criteria that PCGS uses to formulate their price guide.
It seems its the higher level of retail pricing or prices realized. If that is the case, then I think
an average is alot more useful.

The PCGS price guide for a lot of coins is a joke.

the PCGS guide is wholesale for average PCGS slabbed coins. the numismedia guide doesn't make that distinction and probably includes reported sales of all slabbed and raw coins. i know that without a doubt the PCGS prices seem to hardly ever change and the numismedia guide just has too many "holes" in it for me to use it that much. they seem like opisite ends of a useful guide with the truth somewhere in the middle. quite helpful, eh'??

I think it's a money thing. They don't wish to spend what it would take to keep up.

They are cold fish right now, and I'm working on a second set. There are only two coins that are still pricey in 65, the 76-P T1, and the 72P. The stuff that was holdered several years ago is almost a grade point lower than the stuff being graded now. If you can find recently graded 65s, they are wonderful, and are worth saving for a better market. IMO

BTW - The PCGS price guide isn't a good tool right now.

Okay, if the PCGS and NumisMedia price guides are so off, which price guide do most people use right now?

If I'm looking at a nice coin in a big auction I know lots of other collectors are looking at it too. I know some are going to bid greysheet price and some are Registry Set collectors who are going to bid PCGS prices so if I really want the coin I need to outbid all of them. If it has pretty toning or is a brilliant coin without dip spots I'll throw in another $100 or so.
For general purpose pricing I use the list in Coin World or an old Coin Prices that I always have lying around. I know I'm not going to get any good coins @ greysheet so I don't even look at it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
