Has anyone dealt with "U.S. Coins"?

krankykranky Posts: 8,709 ✭✭✭
Their website is www.buyuscoins.com/index.tmpl.

They had a large number of tables at the Baltimore show, with impressive coins including a bunch of proof gold. But I don't remember having heard the name before.

If for some reason you would be reluctant to post something relevant, just PM me instead.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I don't recall those but I usually don't spend too much time at tables where the stuff looks way too big for my bank!

It was a pleasure to meet you tho!
  • I have dealt with them before and would highly recommend them. They do have an impressive inventory (normally too impressive for my checking account), but they always take the time to talk coins and I always look forward to seeing them at the shows.

  • I live in houston and go to US coins every week. They DO have very high end coins but their prices are a little high. If they have something you want you might pay for it but they do have it. Good people to work with. If you are looking for a certain high end coin and do not see it on their website, just send them a email or call as I bet they have it or can locate it quickly. they do not have all of the "good stuff" on their website.

PS I bought the coin below from them on Friday at their Houston location.
  • I recently bought a super 1903 Philippine Proof Set which was Proof-67 across the board except for one 66. Worked with Bonnie and it couldn't have been a more pleasant experience. image

I know U.S. Coins. There's a youngish guy working for them who thinks he has a rapport with me. He likes to call me over and show me his lousy product coins. He gets me over there by telling me that what he has to show me is great stuff.

He has NEVER shown me anything of quality. I haven't gone so far as to blacklist that company, but I will never buy anything from that one guy. Moreover, since my only experience with them is from him, I also have nothing positive to say about that company.

Mark Feld, this guy is one big reason why I hate meeting new coin dealers. Many are quite nice and knowledgeable, but this guy is nothing more than a weenie salesman who knows very little about his product. He couldn't tell quality material if it bit him in the butt.

BTW, Mark, if you feel like it, you may want to warn those people that they need to be very careful of their behavior. The Internet is an excellent medium for disseminating forceful information to a very wide audience.

U.S. Coins has mostly been a wholesaler, but of late have gotten more into retail, including their new website. I have dealt with them. Pretty good flow of new material. Bonnie Sabel is excellent to deal with and Kenny, the owner, who makes the decisions on prices, is willing to be flexible. He seems to be influenced on prices based on his own personal tastes in coins, but nothing wrong with that.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
  • All I know is that they bought $5000 worth of my unspectacular type gold back at the June Long Beach show and I made a $200 profit on the coins-all of which had been purchased within the previous 6 months. They were very pleasant with me-even when I didn't buy or sell anything in September.

They've bought quite a bunch of average type and even common 65 morgans from me without playing counter games. Brian is a good guy to deal with. I don't think he is the guy EVP is talking about. Brian seems to know his stuff very well. I have not been able to buy from them as of yet. They pay strong and won't cherrypick you to death and waste your time. Thumbs up.

  • I have known Kenny Duncan, the owner of U.S. Coins, since the early 80's. The guy is as sharp as a tack.

He is one of the finest dealers in the business, regardless of the aspect you want to consider.

He is a total insider -- he is well connected and has his hands on the pulse of the coin market.

I have never heard anyone say anything bad about him. Ever.

If you can count Kenny as one of your friends, you are indeed a fortunate person. 'Nuf said.

just curious - i'm not familiar w/ them (i don;'t think). but i thought there was a "u.s. coins" that used to slap "pq++" on a third of their coins & "blast" on half the others. same folks? not necessariliy complaining, but just wondering if there the same.

of course, i think there've been several iterations of "u.s. coins" over the years.

I like to drop by there when I can.I live about two miles down the freeway from the shop.
Its nice since they knocked out a wall and expanded the place by three times almost.
One neat thing is/was,I guess its still going on,is just for coming in,they,ll give you the latest BU SQ
as a Thank You for stopping in.I get my BU Ps that I cant usually find in circulation here.
I remember awhile back,Nathan, salesguy, showing me an Anaconda Morgan with cool textile toning across the obverse. It was like a strip of cloth that laid there many a year in the canvas bag it came from.
It sorta resembled the molted skin of a snake from what I remember....Wild.
