Free Coin Collecting software

Hi!

Anyone interested in coin collecting software is invited to download COIN Inventory, an expert system, from http://download.coinweb.org/
I've had eight programmers working on this (not all full time) for three years. If we had done this "for hire" the billings would have been something over a quarter million dollars. We are offering the software free to coin collectors. All we ask is that you tell us what you like or don't like, and any suggestions to make it better. The software is comprehensive - it currently addresses over 54,000 U.S. coins from 1616 to present and in the not distant future will address over 200,000 as we complete our listing of errors and varieties.

If you have a slow link, please email your mailing address to janrschwenk@attbi.com and I will send you a cd-rom (Windows 98 or higher) at no charge.

A note to all..... I have used the software for 3 months now, and I love it. I especially love the inventory section that allows me to enter all of my sladded coins. Try it out, you will like it!
  • Thanks for the link! You saved me having to figure out how to do that!

It said if I didn't have XP I needed to download Microsoft Access 2002 Runtime. Man that's a 52 mb file, do I really need that? What is it?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Thanks for the kind words. By the way, we're adding bar-code and OCR for slabbed coins so you don't have to do any typing.

  • Hi Jan,
Welcome to the forum. You sound like a valuable addition to our mixed group of new and old collectors and dealers. Please enjoy your stay. I will send you my email address for a copy of your "Coin Collecting" software, as I live in rural SE Ohio and have only dial up access.

    Thanks

  • The software currently uses ACCESS XP for some functions (SQL back-end database). This allows the current software to operate. The download is on our site and is free. It wont hurt your computer and can be removed completely when you want. The next version of the software will not require this download but that is a few months away yet. We use ACCESS in this project because it allows us to proto-type and make changes very quickly.

If you need help on installing it, please email me at janrschwenk@attbi.com

    Thanks!

Welcome to the boards, Jan! Thanks so much for the free offer. I think this group will definately put your software through its paces. E-mail has been sent.

    Cheers,

  • I downloaded it..... installed the exe program and all seemed fine. It shows up on my program file list and I have a desktop icon.

The problem I have is it will not open for me. I click it and nothing happens.

    Where did I go wrong?

OK I tried it out and briefly played with it entering 2 coins. I've been using Coin Elite for years so your program is totally greek to me but I can say 1 thing: I like the picture upload feature; it's a lot easier then loading a pict with Coin Elite. I don't think I'll throw CE out yet but I'll give your's a try. Really glad it has a backup option too.

  • Wayne,

I had the same startup problem. Found I needed the Access runtime. I had Access for another app, but must not have been new enough.
  • So I've got to get Access Runtime to use this program? I'm having the same problems. Install goes fine, but when loaded, nothing happens...

Downloaded and installed, seems to run very well. I am a newbie to this kind of application, is there a manual that I can access on line?

    Looks nice, real nice.
  • Hi LanLord,

See! A nice and useful suggestion. I will put the (preliminary) manual on line - should be up tomorrow morning.

    Thanks!

I think I'll need the CD-ROM, though, slow connection... I appreciate the opportunity to see your product.
  • Ok has anyone run into this problem. I finally loaded MSAccess 2000 Runtime, and got the program to load, but now the coin software loads but pops up an error on open saying "This database is in an unrecognizied format. The database may have been created with a later version of than the one you are using. Upgrade your version of to the current one, then open this database." What is it talking about, and why does it seem like there's a word missing in both of those sentences?

2 Hours of frustration, i'm not sure if this is worth it.

  • This worked great for me. I have xp but still needed the access stuff. I went back to get it when the program did not open. Then it worked fine.

Cypher try uninstalling everything and deleting it, then download it all again including access again. Install access first then the coin software.

  • Do you have to have Windows XP? Thanks for opportunity. Think I will wait and read some comments before I DL it tho. I don't have a fast connect, and or Access, so will take me forever to DL.

  • I want to find out if I can import my existing data. It is already stored in both Excel and Access format. If I change the column headers to a format this new software can recognize, can I save time by not having to re-enter everything? I guess I need to wait for the manual...

Got itimage found the second link. I did have to turn off all the add killers to keep the page from hanging and then sending an error report.
Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • Hey, I got the program a few days ago and first had a chance to really use it tonight. Did anyone else notice that when putting coins into the program there is no 3 cent or 20 cent denomination to choose from or is it just me? also does anyone know how to edit a listiting after you sold your coin? All i can do is look at READ ONLY files once the listing was made and can't change anything.
  • Thanks for the great offer, Jan.

    PM and e-mail sent.

Before I start, I am not associated with the programmers. But being a programmer, I can usually figure out these problems and offer a bit of assistance to you all.

Jake, your problem with the DB is you need the Microsoft Access 2002 runtime and not the 2000 version.

No luck here on XP home ed. It installed the runtime2002 app download and that was it. no icons or programs added to the program list. I must be missing something

The runtime install will not install anything visible to you. Instead, it installs many necessary items into the computer that allows the inventory program to run. After a successful install of the runtime, you want to run the "CoinInventory.exe" program to actually install the program. Think of the runtime as a foundation that lets the program run.

How do you edit an entry?
Go to the coin inventory option and select the coin you want to edit. You can show all and scroll to find it or enter whatever search criteria and search it. When you find the line item in the list below with your coin, select the row and scroll all the way to the right. You'll find four little icons representing different functions. The first allows you to edit the line item (with history tracking). The second is a detail read-only view. The third deletes the coin and the last brings up the picture of the coin.

Missing denomination, like 20 cents and 3 cents
The way the program is written, you start with the date. When you put in the date, only the denominations that were issued on that date are viewable (same with mint marks). So if you input 1875 for your date, then you'll see 0.20 show up in the denomination drop down list.

  • editing entry-
i know my computer is dumb but it won't let me scroll all the way to the right it stops at vender, after vender i see half a coloum but i don't know what it's for because i can't scroll over that far, please help me

    Thank you
  • nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
Hmm, I looked again and saw that the icons are repeated on the left hand side of the screen, too. They are repeated for each item in the list. The first one is for editing, the second for viewing, third for deleting and the last for viewing a pic.

  • Bikingnut, you have to download access-xp it's free from his site, the only bad thing is it's somthing like a 52MB file. Once you get it to work it's a great program.

  • Dog97,

Yes you need Access 2002-XP runtime. If your download is too slow (52+mb) email your mailing address to janrschwenk@attbi.com and I will happily send you a cd-rom with all software and preliminary manual at no charge. Please note, the disc I send you is small (3" dia.) but it is a real cd and works in every cd reader I have seen in the last many years.

Also, if you have trouble getting the software to work or run, or have questions, please ask questions here in the forum and we will get you answers as quickly as we can.

    Thanks!
