What's the greatest newspaper carrier tip you've ever heard of??

Yes, this is a numismatic thread. I was talking with a guy the other day at work about coins. He related a story to me about a old lady that gave him a rare coin as a tip when he was a kid. He's about 50 now so this occured about 40 years ago. He tried to tell the lady it was to much of a tip but she wouldn't have no for an answer. So, he showed it to me....a EF/AU 1879 $4 flowing hair Stella!image Can you imagine?? Beats anything I ever received....how about you??

  • I once delivered papers to a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Loma Prieta earthquake did about $2 million in damage.
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse

Never got anything interesting. There was one lady on my route that was so mean I was scared to collect from her. Finally after 4 months I made myself go collect the money and she yelled at me for not collecting every month. Man that lady scared me. To this day I remember her address.

Amazing story about the Stella. Does the guy know how much it's worth?

  • I was VERY small and was staying at my grandmas for the summer. I remember the boy coming to the door and collecting for the paper. I got the money from my grandma, and paid him. In the change I got an Indian Head $5 gold piece 1904. She was flabbergasted when I gave it to her. It was in fact correct change as far as face value went. She stashed that for years until she got sickley and then my aunt got into her stuff and took it. No one knows where its at now, auntie acts dumb every time we ask about it.

Never hit a screen door with a newspaper. Years ago I had started my boys on a paper route until they got in their teens and lazy. If the wife wasn't helping them out then I was. One morning, I got stuck with the job. With the list of addresses the wife gave me, it wasn't too long before I had hit this senior's screen door and before I was out of his yard he was out there in his robe
chewing my butt out. You know how you've seen it done on TV, throwing that paper up on the steps. The old guy ended up throwing the newspaper back at me exclaiming he didn't get the paper on weekdays
    anyway. Oops!

Yes, he knows...he's a fellow collector and we swap stories every week. I talked him into going to the LB show last time and he had a good time, buying a 1877 IHC for his collection.

I had a customer I never could figure out how to collect from. The place was surrounded by a chainlink fence...lights on all night....security cameras everywhere...this in a middle class neighborhood in the 60's....I was too dumb to quit delivering....needless to say, there were no tips!
