Question About Proof Sets

I bought some Proof sets on eBay (Penny, Quarter, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar). They all look great but some of the coins in the plastic holder are upside down. Does that mean they have been tampered with?

Not necessarily. The mint is known to screw up from time to time when packaging the sets. A good indication might be how many are that way? If it is a high percentage of the sets, than there may have been some shennanigans going on. Also, what years are the sets? Some of the earlier ones were pretty much impossible to open without cracking the plastic.

  • Sometimes the coins are not straight when they get put in the holder. Many times the holders let them move slightly so they work themselves around.
