Which do you have ? Type of 16 or Type of 17. This can apply to the Mint marked 17's also.
Have some idle time, whats new, and looked at mine and the 17P is a Type of 16 the 17D is a Type of 16 and the 17S is a Type of 17. Really paid no attention to this when they were bought. Have a New 17P coming and wonder which it will be.

I had both of all three PDS, but sold off the extras to buy other dimes. There are a lot of varities in the Mercurys that a lot of people don't know about. I think there are 7 or 8 different 42-D's.

Being the Old Time Dime collector you are, did you find the 17S to be quite a bit harder to find in the Type of 16 ? I sure have. Do not think I have seen one, that I was interested in, at all.
Did have a 31D double die at one time but sold it also for Merc Up-grades. Never have found a 36P double die though.
Maybe after the Set is completed these would be some fun to pursue.

I have the 31-D, Just got it in a 64FB holder. Have the 36 raw, have the 35 in MS65 PCI and have numerous other RPD's. Too many to mention. Had a 29-S DDO that I got from L & C as a 63. Sent it in and it came back 58. Nicest 58 I have ever seen. I sent it back to Lee for a refund. Trying to get out of some of the varity stuff.

Here is a picture of the Wing on a Type of 16, the left photo, and the Type of 17, the right photo. Look at the way the Feathers Protrude on the Right leading edge of both examples. Especially the bottom 3 feathers. The 16 projects straight out while the 17 Type Swoops slightly upward. There really is no premium for these varieties.
By the way good luck with the 17D. A tough date.

If you ever get ahold of a 1918 Dime they made another change to the Wing that makes it the 3rd type. The change made in 1918 continued through the end of the series. Very suttle changes but they are different and not well know outside of the Merc collectors fraternity.

I knew about the 16 type, but thought the 17 type went to the end of production. This is why I hang around and listen. Thanks Ken, and everyone else also, for furthering my education. Ken, Great photos, much better than the ones I thought I learned from. Please post comparison photos of all three sXs sometime if you get the chance, for us newbies.

Thanks for the info about these different types.
My '17-P is the type of 1917; the '17-S is the type of 1916.
Does the type of 1917 show less definition in the feathers? My '17-P and the coin on the right in your picture above both seem to have less detail than my 1916 or 1918 coins.

Here you go. Notice the different way the Smaller feathers are made to the left of the main feathers, some what smaller and more up swooped that the 16's or 17s. Also there are differences in the Hair just behind Miss Liberties cheek but I have found these to be very hard to see.
Jim:
It seems so to me, but maybe that is just the Dimes I have acquired. Maybe more folks can comment on this.
