Yet another happy post about finding silver halves at the bank

Motivated by all the recent posts about finding silver halves at the bank, I went in search today.

I went to one local bank and asked for two rolls of halves. The teller insisted on counting them, so as she was counting the first roll, I could see the tell-tale whiteness of a silver half in the roll; then, as she was counting the second, I could see that they were all silver! (Be still my thumping heart, I thought, I doubt if they're all 90%ers!)

So, I immediately asked if the had any more halves. She had two more rolls, but as she counted them, I didn't see any white coins.

I took them home and the results: 21 40% silver halves!

Not bad at all!

Better than my luck, I had been reading about all the halves being found at banks, so last month i decided to see what i could find.

I purchsed about 25 rolls from various locations, and found one single 40% 1968.

  • Isn't it exciting? I reported this past week that I got a 1963-D Franklin
in the only roll the teller had. Included in the same roll was a 40%
half that served as a bonus. I felt I was reliving the old days
when it wasn't a question of finding a silver half in a roll,
since they all were, but if you were lucky enough to find a rare one.

I went to a few bank branches today but they were all closed. I planned
to get some more rolls to look through. I'll get some Tuesday for sure.

With all the posts, I, too, went on a search last week. Out of one roll, because that was all they had, I found 8 40%ers and one 1964. image Not too shabby. Maybe next time I find a roll, it might all be 1964!!! image

Send me $13.00 plus shipping costs and I will send you a full roll of 40% Kennedy halves. I have about 50 rolls and can't get rid of them. The dealers around here only want to pay face value for them

    John,

I know what you mean about dealers being unwilling to buy 40% silver halves!

I've been going to banks in my area looking for silver halves for about the last ten years and it seems that whenever the price of junk silver goes down a lot of folks just deposit their halves instead of selling them and I end up with a lot of 40% halves.

I think the bigger dealers around here will pay $12 for a roll of 40% halves, but many times the smaller dealers and some of the dealers at shows won't buy 40% halves because they don't want to tie up their capital and they don't want to haul them around!

    Dave and John,
While I've never dealt with these people, California Numismatic Investments, they seem to indicate that they will purchase your 40% halves. It might be worth a try since you might make a couple hundred with them? If you do, let me know. I just don't have the volumes of silver worth the effort yet. image

  • Well, I must say, my first search since moving to Seattle was disappointing. $200 and not a single coin worth keeping. No silver at all. Back in Portland, it seemed so easy, I was always getting Franklins and 64 Kennedys and 40% silver. In fact this past Summer I got $100 from teh Washington Mutual in downtown Vancouver WA, and for 4 solid rolls of 40% silver. So any of you in Portland, go to the Washington Mutual branches, they usually had the good stuff! I may try again next weekend with some local suburban branches.

Geoman, you slipped up. 1970 is also silver. They were only issued in mint & proof sets.

  • I got lucky and found a bank where someone had traded in some old half rolls. I bought as many as they had and averaged 1 90% and 2 40% silvers per roll. Also there was a '63 AU Franklin in one of the rolls. I think the well is dry but I'll still go back for more.
