Check out this Morgan in a first generation PCGS slab

I just got back from the Baltimore show. met some great people from the Board and saw some grat coins...sold quite a few too. I will provide more details after I get some sleep. Came across a dealer who had quite a few first generation Morgans in the old "clanker" PCGS slabs. I thought I would scan one of them for your perusal. A typical weak strike for a O mint coin, but i thought it was awful nice for a MS63 image

Very nice! Are the "clanker PCGS" slabs the small ones with the info that looks like it was typed in? I have a Franklin in an older PCGS slab, and it clicks inside the holder when moved.

Will you keep it in this original holder or re-submit for re-slabbing?

  • I just dropped 4 off to NCS. A Boone, A Texas, A Walking Lib and A Morgan.All had Ugly a$$ toning.Very dark.But I got them cheep as I remember.
The rattling kind of got on my nerves.
  • I bought a year ago an 1884-O MS63PL Morgan dollar in an old PCGS green holder.Nice looking you have there.

Greg, Nice catch. If your picture is accurate, the Morgan is at least 65. I am surprised that it wasn't upgraded already.

Looks pretty nice! Not many marks, I would expect more for a 63.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Thanks everyone. I was suprised to see a coin this nice in an old holder myself. I also picked up an 1887 that is just as nice in the same type holder. I had to look twice, OK three times, when I first saw them since they looked so nice. The darn things actually have that "puffy cheek" look, and very few marks period. the scan is quite accurate as to how the coin looks, actually it shows a few marks that are really tough to see in "normal" viewing conditions. It is the kind of coin, that to me anyhow, wouldn't be out of place in a 65 holder today.

I will leave it in the old style slab. They are getting harder to find, and make good conversation pieces. Oh , by the way, I paid Greysheet Bid MS63 for the two coins image
