Just MHO as always.

One thing is that BJ is finalizing upcoming "showdowns" and this is kind of a "quiet period" while things get worked out.
Another thing is deals are being talked about less and less over here. Hey David, as you know, I bought a near $10,000 coin from you last week, but neither one of us chose to even talk about the coin, the series, the easy deal we did, how this forum has become a good place to buy and sell coins between members (as you easily did). What happens is no matter what the deal is (I could have bought from you a near $10,000 modern coin or a $10,000 19th century rarity) there will be that immediate negative posting which bascially takes the enjoyment out of even discussing the topic. Have you noticed that as well?
Frankly, we should all consider agreeing to have zero tolerance for "sour grapes" kind of posts. Like Mom used to say, "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing". This place would be a better place if that creed was followed. If someone wants to post about the great 19th century coin they just sold or bought, we should not attack one side or the other as getting "ripped off". Same for the sale of a modern coin, a collection or whatever. If one feels compelled to "warn" one side or the other, isn't a "PM" an acceptable way to do it? Let's make this board a more pleasant place and invite more threads and have new collectors not worried that if they post about the new coin they just bought, they will be labeled an "idiot" or a "moron".

I agree, if nothing good can be said say nothing. Well, OK, in most cases.
If I am one of the Negative people just Ignore this Post.

worse than anyone else. ...And you have to hear about "fishing lures" all
the time!!
My wife would not let me go to Baltimore as household chores piled up.
I'm sure that there are plenty of lurkers out of the 4500 Registry set participants. Maybe some of them will be inclined to start participating if there are plenty of positive threads and posts here.
I will not say anything negative about the transaction at all, as long as the coin involved was either a Lincoln cent, a Buffalo nickel, or an early commem half.
If it was minted before 1959 and is not one of those three coins, I will have no opinion.
If it was minted after 1959, I will snicker to myself, but not say anything negative.
If it was a Mercury dime, I will request a seperate forum be opened just for the bashing of your transaction and the humiliation of both of you.
There are too many sets, and the weighting has become too complicated. A registry seems like it should feature the great sets in great series. Now it seems like we have something for everyone. The competitive aspect has dried up because it is too diffused. We used to have great competition in the 20th century type set. Now you never hear anything about it. The Merc guys are still OK, but that's about it. Since everyone can have a top five set if you look hard enough for a slot, the intense interest is gone. Why post about your set or about your competitor's set, because no one cares anymore. A week or so ago, I put up a post about a great looking Walker set that is getting going. I was trying to get some info on who might own it. A year ago, everyone would have been all over that tracking it down. Now I got two or three responses and that's it. Nobody cares any more. The registry has become just so much commercial hype. The success of the registry killed it, long live the registry. Don't let the number of registered sets fool you. The soul (the noia for those who know classic Greek) is gone. When I registered my then number 1 IKE set two years ago, it was a great source of pride. Even my kids were talking about it. Now who cares. A great set is still a great source of pride, but no longer because of the registry location.

Break a type set into 20 sets and there is obviously going to be less competition.
Create new with variety sets along side the regular sets then add only 1 or 2 varieties also lessens compeition. Either listen to the posts here and add all varieties or eliminate the with varieties sets and have the 1 or 2 varieites as optional in the regular set.

This started after I got totally bashed by Quattro Coins because I was trying to sell a hard to find PQ 1939S MS66 Washington quarter for $500. When I mean bashed.. this guy was relentless. Needless to say, I havent seen this coin listed since I did (I think it was July). Turns out Quattro still hasnt found one for his Registry set and I've decided to keep it or better yet, I may have a trade in the works for another Registry member that would yield me a different early date semi key. However, I think I get more than $500 for this coin not too far down the road.
So now I know why the Boards are silent!! You cant make a buck (which is your right) without someone trying to step in and spoil your offering!! Just because they are jealous or think its wrong to sell a coin for a good price. Cmon give me a break!!
I agree.. If you have nothing nice to say.. dont say it!!
Greg: Excellent post!
Let the members decide who's bashin' who(m?)!
You wanted to bring this up - you ain't seen "relentness" yet!!!
"Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
Whichever way your pleasure tends
if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind"
Now, the board's hoppin'!

face value auctions
I am sure you didn't and still don't think you did anything wrong however my read on this is that WWQ's post was on the BUY/SELL forum. I do not think posting your opinion of his price on that forum is appropriate. On this forum discussion is encouraged but posting a sellers buy price on that forum is simply intrusive.
Furthermore I do not see how the price was all that far out of line. The 39S has a mintage of about 1/3 of the 39D and a MS66 POP of about 1/2. Therfore most of the buy price was probably accorded to the 39S. Add to that the variability in the auction format, why should a buyer be obligated to pass along an incredible deal to the next buyer? That is just not how the world works. I only paid $3 apiece for the 2 1999P SBA$'s that then graded MS68. Am I obligated to sell them for under $20?
There is often a fine line between stating ones opinion and attacking someone (and I hope I have not crossed it). I was in a similar situation not too long ago when I thought that a sale price was out of line so I know how it goes. All I am saying is that we lessen the forum by being overly negative and turning people away from being a part of it.
First off, your's is one opinion that I respect.
I didn't think that I was being relentless before, and I did not bring-up my "bashing". If someone accusses me of "bashing", can I not bring back the thread in question?
Is he not "bashing" me by calling me a "basher"?!?
Sorry if you think that I was out of line.
I will try to "bite my tongue" a little more often, and and keep such "knowlege" off the boards!
"While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.
But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him."
Don
Silent, but
WWQ; I AM NOT SLAMMING YOU EITHER!
I better shut up before I get myself way in the middle of this (or did I already?)
I am serious that about a year ago I ended up in the same position and had to duck out before it got ugly.
Another thread just got started by Walkerguy that I think shows where we have gotten. It sounds like he is afraid to post here. I really think that the negativity got out of hand for awhile. I am glad to see it getting friendly around here again.Walkerguy thread
