Do you buy OTHER GRADED Cards and CRACK THEM??

I was wondering if any of you have bought non-PSA graded cards, cracked them open and submitted them to PSA?

Let me state my affliation first. I am a true PSA loyalist. I prefer there graded cards for a number of reasons that I won't go inot here. But I have noticed some real "Deals" with other companies graded cards and have seriously considered buying them and cracking them open and submitting to PSA.

Have any of you had success in doing this?

Am I crazy for considering it? (I wod not pay a large amount for any of the cards I am considering doing this with)

Are there any companies I should avoid?

Any other thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

  • There has been plenty of discussion on these boards regarding this. It is something that happens often.

From the what the gurus here say, stay away from Pro Grading. You'll find that the card you crack out of a Pro Graded slab will most times come back as trimmed (mostly the vintage cards).

I'm about to submit a KSA graded card, so we'll see how that goes.

Most are cracking SGC and submitting to PSA.

    Good luck!

I limit my crossovers to SGC and BGS. If the card looks OK, I've never had a problem getting it changed to PSA.

  • I purchased a 1983 Donruss Mike Schmidt FGS Gem 10 and sent it to PSA and recieved a 10. I currently have a couple of BVG 8.5 's that I have sent in. I hope to have the grades on those next week. I also have sent a couple sgc 96's in the same batch. Just a side note, I have found that putting the slabbed cards in a sealed sandwich bag, taking a hammer and gently going around the edges (I do this on my carport) is the easiest way to open these. It keeps shards of plastic from flying everywhere, and it makes very easy to pry open without damaging the card.

The only slabs I've opened which have flying shards of plastic are BGS/BVG holders. SGC and PSA holders are mind-numbingly simple. A jewelers screwdriver in the seam and they split open into two pieces. No muss no fuss.

FGS are very hard to open, as are Mint and MGS slabs

    Replace "there" with their.
    Replace "inot" with in to.
    affliation???? means affiliation???

"Am I crazy for considering it? (I wod not pay a large amount for any of the cards I am considering doing this with)."

    Replace "wod" with would.

Besides that, I would recommend SGC. They are the closest to the grade of PSA. I have even had some cards get bumped up to a higher grade.

    Mike,
    that is NOT necessarily true!

    I have had a:
    SGC 96 come back a psa 9
    SGC 96 come back a psa 8
    SGC 92 come back a psa 9
    SGC 84 come back a psa 8
    AND
I had a SGC 96 come back UNGRADED - due to TRIMMING!

EVEN WITH SGC, it is a crap shoot.

  • Hi Jeff,

I am not saying SGC is a guarantee. I have had much luck with them. You should have sent the trim back to SGC again to see if they would regrade it. If not, from their website, they are supposed to guarantee the grade like PSA. I believe PSA and SGC are the only 2 companies doing that? Am I correct in making that comment or is GAI now in the guarantee business???

Before you crack a card out of one holder, you must first scrutinize the card very heavily to see if it will meet the standards of the grade you want from the new submission. The "destination company" isn't going to care two beans what the other holder said - the card itself will be judged on its own merits.

If you don't think the card will end up with the grade you want in the new holder, don't crack it.

BKAH> I disagree that it's a crap-shoot. There is some risk involved. But. . .assuming you stick with one of the big three, if you are strict enough in evaluating the card before cracking it the success rate should be high.

With some vintage sets -- sometimes it is only through obtaining cards graded by other companies that you even have a hope of finding a card in PSA 7/8 equivalent condition within a year or two of searching. The results typically are not very favorable -- but sometimes it works out well. Pre-screen as well as you can -- and hopefully it will work out for you. But be very careful with what you are doing -- if you crack everything in other companies' holders -- you will be burned more often than not.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • So far I have only submitted 69 Topps Decals from WCG and BCCG that were 10's to PSA .

I have had the following results:

    PSA 9's - 3
    PSA 8 - 2
    Trimmed not holdered - 1

As I have paid significantly less than PSA versions of these it has been an acceptable risk to me doing this

  • I have submitted 5 BCCG 10's and have recieved the following:

    1 PSA 9
    4 PSA 8's

Kendall - Thanks for the tip on the plastic bags.

Have always used the "hammer around the edges" method, although I use a hard surface.
Busted out 60 slabs today, after inserting into freezer bags, and it worked great !

Hate finding those shards of plastic all over the garage for weeks afterward ...

    Missinglink,

You'll find this mentioned in some of the previous links, but I can tell you from experience that you should be cautious
when breaking open high graded vintage cards from Beckett. PSA will not grade cards that have been recently cut
from sheets. I have spent way too much money learning this lesson as you often see high grade OPC hockey cards
in Beckett holders, but you will not be able to get them in PSA holders. I have not run into this issue with cards from
SGC and KSA often, though my experience has found that with KSA, they tend to cross-over 1 grade less to PSA.
