My Morgan dollar was altered...

I received submission results today. My 1879-S S1$, ACG MS64 didn’t cross. They said that the surfaces had been altered (cleaned, maybe? It’s not obvious to me). Anyway, now I’m wondering what to do with the coin. I was hoping to get it out of the ACG holder - I was not familiar with them at the time that I bought it. I can’t re-sell it now, ethically, knowing that there’s a problem with it. What would you do?

On the bright side, my ICG MS67 FS 1950-D Jefferson nickel crossed to PCGS MS66 FS! It’s worth quite a bit more now.

  • Put it up for sale on ebay in the bodybag. You will probably take a bath on it, but if you really don't want to keep it, you will at least get something back.

    Hey Dan,

Just because PCGS says it has altered surfaces doesn't make it so. Have some others look at it if you are not confident in your own abilities OR for a 2nd/3rd opinion.

If it is a reverse of 78, I may be interested for the right price, providing it isn't whizzed or polished.

Look at it in a dark room with a halogen lamp and see what you see then.
