Coins for Kids

OK, I have a candidate for you guys. Anthony is a 13 year old kid with ADD, no real male influence in his life, and is heavily influenced by peer pressure, not all good. He seems to really brighten up when we talk about numismatics, and I have given him some coins from time to time which he really seems to appreciate. I have recently asked his mother if it would be ok for Anthony to spend some time with me on a regular basis, working with me in my coin business, and she has agreed that it might be a good thing. This kid is very bright, but is at such a critical stage in his development, that he could easily be swayed by the wrong influences. I won't reveal his last name because I don't want to embarrass him, but if anyone feels they would like to send a coin or two his way, his address is: 6-B Wells Place, Palm Coast, FL 32164.

  • Does Anthony have any particular series that interest him most? What do you have him doing to help you out?
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

Anthony's interests have not really developed to the point of specialization at this point. I'm hoping that as we spend more time together he will start to focus on a particular area. I only became aware of Anthony's situation a few weeks ago. His mother helps my wife keep our house in some semblance of order, and I only met Anthony when our local school system had a "teachers's work day" and she brought him with her to out home to because she didn't want him to stay home alone. Since then I have seen him a couple of times, and I'm hoping to develop the relationship and focus his energies on numismatics.

  • I have a 1964 proof set, uncarved "like a thanksgiving turkey" ... or otherwise for that matter.

I'll donate the set. image The only caveat is that it must be an anonymous gift.

edit: I've also requested Carol pin this topic. This is a nice departure from the pontificating and negativity.

Nice idea, Dad. image It's great to see someone try to reach out and make a difference in a youngster's life.

  • Just a thought...

Could we perhaps gather up a collection of donated items, and make one shipment? or... would that complicate matters?
I'm just thinking of the "Big Early Christmas" package aspect of this very suitable cause.

    Hi Everyone,
I have received several PMs requesting Anthony's last name for mailing purposes. I have a pretty good idea of the regulars on this board and will be happy to communicate that information to anyone that I recognize as a regular. I just didn't want to run the risk of one of Anthony's schoolmates figuring out who this was for and using the information to embarass him. This is truly an outstanding community!!! image

    HI Oreville,
I hadn't thought that far ahead, but I'll be happy to send a gift subscription to "Coins" to him for Christmas. That's a great idea!
I'll be gone all day, but will answer any PMs you send this evening. I keep being amazed by the giving spirit of this community!

I have had eleven members of this community advise me they are sending out something of numismatic interest to Anthony, and I'm sure others have done so without letting me know. A BIG thank you to everyone that got involved in this.
