Off topic - SLABBING in general

I have a good number of slabbed coins. I feel they are very attractive and it is a good piece of mind to think they are reasonably well protected and even the occassional drop hasn't harmed any of them yet.

In addition, of course, there is at least the impression of a standard grading system in use which makes buying easier for numbskulls like me who can't tell a grade within 4 points to save his life.

That said, I see that there are slabbing companies for pretty much every standardized collectable, cards, comics, others I suppose.

Now I was thinking, a slabbed coin is just as attractive as a raw coin (unless you have a lettered edge or something).

However, a comic can no longer be enjoyed at all other than the cover. Who would want that? Why not collect black pieces of paper or covers?

Anyway, sorry for the random musing and the off-topic but I was just noticing a few slabbed-comics on ebay and thinking why bother paying a lot for an enjoyable "investment" when it is no longer enjoyable.

once a coin is slabbed you cannot "fondle" it either... I believe something is lost, as in the case of the comic.

Although it IS preserved, it is also separated from its "made for" purpose - to be held in someone's hands and enjoyed.

  • Its4real,

True. I do admit to some sick-pleasure from flipping this silver eagle that I keep by my desk image

And, the last time I was at the grocery store with a slabbed half dollar it took me an extra 25 minutes to check out image

Lucy is in the process of getting some of her Archie comics from the late 40s and 50s slabbed and graded. I agree with you, once it is entombed I cannot read it again unless I 'crack' it out. However, I have already read them and I need to be prepared for when CGC creates a Registry so the HepKitty can be #1!

When CGC first started slabbing comics I went around and tried to buy some and have them graded. It's much easier to grade a comic than a coin but I found that most comic book dealers truly belive they grade very conservative but compared to CGC they grade very liberal. It is harder to buy accurately graded comics than it is coins. At least that's my perception.
  • I have the first issue of the Silver Surfer back from the 1960's. But it's been worn up a bit though. That would have been nice to have a copy sealed in new condition.

What would your slabbed coins be worth if the grading services went out of business? What would your coins be worth if the Internet was taken offline for good?
