GAI Going To A Half Point System

One of my little birds has informed me that Global is going to a half grade system. Probably be rolling as I type this.

I know that we have hashed the subject here in the past but in light of this news (allbeit unsubstantiated at this point), what the general concensus was.

Why would they start the half point system at this point. They are a 1 year old company, why not institute it at their inception? Perhaps this is their way of generating more submissions by current customers re-submitting the cards hoping for the extra half point bump. So whats next on the agenda? Maybe next year they can start the tenth of a point upgrade...jay
  • Sounds like Steve's boat has sprung a leak or maybe hit an iceberg after the Bazooka screw up and he's looking for ways to keep it from sinking.
I collect the 1960 and 1961 Nu Card issues. I also enjoy the 1959 Fleer Three Stooges.

I can't find anything about the GAI Bazooka incident... anyone?

  • I don't know about leaking boats as I am nautically challenged, but it does occur to me that a half point system sure helps collectors when their registry is up and running, well at least increases competition for them.

    Paul,
are they adding more half grades than the 4 or five already in place?
I believe 5.5, 4.5, 3.4, 2.5 and 1.5 were part of the original format, perhaps not.

GAI has been out for over a year now -- I think for their long-term success, they need to either get a) a big collector to buy in or b) to have some new innovative ideas really work for them. Without either of those, I think it will ultimately challenge their long-term viability.

The pack grading should give them at least a small niche and some needed marketing.

Maybe GAI can grade their submissions like Texaco sells gasoline...8 9/10th. Both of which is pretty lame.

  • Always a fan of the half-point scale. One key advantage of grading is removing some subjectivity. The more exact the process the better. I'm sick of hearing "this is a real high-end 8, etc". I've seen more sliders this year than Sammy Sosa.

Half-point systems do have some merit in certain circumstances.

However -- if you could find me anyone who could tell the differences between an 8, an 8.5, a 9, a 9.5 and a 10 on any consistent basis would be amazing. Though I can sometimes accept the 8.5 grade -- a split grade between a 9 and 10 borders on ludicrous in my opinion.

  • Marc,
Agreed 100%. What the heck is a 9.5??? I've always wondered that one. Did the card stock SMELL funny?

what are you guys talking about??
which grading company has a 9.5? is that a beckett thing?
  • Marc,

Difference between a 9.5 and a 10. I think you answered your own
question. I think you stated that every 10 has something wrong with
it in a minor aspect, that is a bgs 9.5. Now a 10 is absolute flawless card.
You know one you can take to the can day after day and still find nothing..
