My new 2c piece... iconized?

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,530 ✭✭✭✭✭
Whaddya think? Will this be a nice icon when upload day comes around?

Don't get me wrong- I love my PR63 CAM 1898 Barber half. But I just received my new PR64 RD 1868 2c piece and think it would make a nice new icon, perhaps?

The coin as seen on eBay

And the coin as seen in my proposed new icon:

image

It has some light cameo contrast. Not like the Barber half, but hey- as I understand it, PCGS has graded only two 2-cent pieces with a CAM designation. For the entire series. I don't know if my new one would quite have what it takes to upgrade into a CAM holder. Maybe not quite enough contrast, there. It's close, though, maybe? It's fun to speculate on, though I don't know if I will ever get around to trying for the upgrade. Regardless of what the holder says, CAM or not, I love the coin.

As I understand it from the Forum Empress, the 15th of each month will be Custom Icon Upload Day. (Oh goodie!) image

  • LM,

That coin is sweet! You weren't wrong about it having significant cameo contrast.

    The icon is really cool!

  • LM,
I think that is a fantastic coin and icon. You should change to that when the opportunity comes up again. (Hopefully you'll get the opportunity next time, as I recall the window slammed shut on you before you even heard about it last month). It won't take people long to get used to that new beautiful icon.

I love it - I'm going to do the same thing but with the other side of mine - You know -> to give my 2cents worth.

A nice close-up of the middle with the 2 cents surrounded by the wreath -

What kind of file do we need? .jpg? .gif? what about size limits? 40KB?
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,530 ✭✭✭✭✭
sinin1- it has to be no larger than 100 X 100, and I believe a jpeg format. That's what mine is, anyway. I can't remember the file size limitation, but I think it might be 50K.

  • That's one sharp looking coin and icon. Since your current icon is also a top notch winner, maybe you should consider an icon that "toggles" from one coin to the other like the icon "ara" uses?
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

Interesting idea. I don't know how to do those gif files, though. image

Oh, yeah- sinin1- apparently .gif files are OK, too, as many people have animated icons. But I have yet to learn how to do all that.

    It's 10K.

Oops. Yeah. He's right. 10K for icons. I guess I was thinking of the 50K for attachments? image

Not only soon-to-be-iconized, but now Registered as well! image

Hey, how many times have you seen somebody with a single coin register it as a set, and get a 10% completion rating with a #4 ranking and #6 on the All Time Finest list? And on a Registry Set with Eliasberg at #3 on the All Time list, as well? LOL image

  • Very nice.
  • lordm,

If you really want to animate your coin, I'd be glad to do it for you. Just email me the pics.
I prefer the .gif format, because you can make the background transparent. I think it looks nicer than having a square picture.

Thanks, Clark. I like my sunset background. Could the 2c obverse and the Barber reverse flip around over that background, or would it be too "busy" (and weird-looking, with such different designs?) How's all that work, in layman's terms? How does one create gif images and animations?

  • I use Adobe ImageReady to do animated gifs. The biggest problem is the file-size limitation. Getting a single-layer image down to 10k is easy, but every animated layer you add makes the file bigger. To reduce the filesize you have to sacrifice picture quality.

As far as the two coins and the rainbow background... anything's possible. I mean, if you really think that would look good... uh... not that it wouldn't look just marvelous... I mean, I think that's a great idea! image

Hmm... coupling that background with a moving object might cause nausea, now that I think about it...

A lot of those animated gifs do not display properly on this computer, anway. I guess I'll stick to a static icon. Thanks for offerin', though.

However, it would be good to learn someday. Point taken about the filesizes- I wondered about that.

lord: You could always christen that new icon with that big bottle of wine at your hotel. There would be enough for everyone to enjoy!

Why not switch icons once a month. The coin of the month club? This way...we are all happy....after all we are sick of looking at my 55 DDO.

Also your coin indeed looks cameo at least on the obverse ...any pics of the reverse?

Yeah, I know it can confuse people, but I like to change icons once in a while. My signature LordM pic has stayed the same, so people will know who I am anyway.

Oreville- thanks. The coin was obviously well-photographed in its best possible light, but the contrast is there in person as well. Were I to venture a realistic guess, I would imagine my odds of getting a CAM on regrade are maybe around 20-30% or so. It might be a bit of a stretch. I have no experience in the matter, though, so I am merely blowing smoke-rings, I guess.

Here's the auction link again, with the picture still attached as of this post.
