That's a late-80's vintage slab. I think that is the first of the current-sized holders; the replacement for the old small holders with the cheesy-looking dot-matrix-printed labels.
That generation was fairly short-lived, I believe. That holder and the one that followed it had a "collar" around the outer edge; sort of a 3-piece holder. They were sturdy.
This coin was in such a holder. (The image was brightened so that background pattern on the label isn't visible in the picture, but it was there.)
The coin was consigned to me by my local dealer. I sold it on eBay for him (too bad I couldn't afford it for myself!) It came from a local Jekyll Island estate that had some wonderful coins. I saw the original invoice with some of the coins; I believe it was from Heritage and was dated 1989, if I remember correctly.
Third generation PCGS slab, used basicly in December of 1989 only. The pictured slab is NOT a sample slab, but a sample slab was ade using this design. (Dog97 has one) I'm not sure what show they would have been distributed at though since the slab changed again in Jan of 1990 and they probably would have used the new slab at the FUN show.
I have a peace dollar in a slab like that it is also a ms62. I think that if I were to resubmit it it might come back a ms63 or better. I won't be surprised if the morgan would grade better today also.
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Can anyone list the appearance of all the PCGS holders from day one?? If aready done previously, please direct me to the site/thread.

However, there may have been samples issued in that type of holder. (Probably were).
