  • I've got only 1, the Benson 1799 $ PCGS Au50. It's awesome. Mike Bob bought it out of the auction at $3800 w/bid at $3200. He wanted $4500 and there was no knocking him down. I paid it and now bid is $3750 I believe (thats what I've heard, I don't have a current sheet).

are you kidding? image probably 1/2 my collection is bust. my favorite is 1 i've mentioned lots of times, a 1797 draped-bust half w/ fine details, holed, bent, corroded & cleaned, i got it repaired and net-grade it as ag. it looks like dogmeat, but i love the coin, & it's the last 1 i'd part with in my collection.

oh yeah, forgot to mention, i paid $6500, book value is maybe only $6000 in ag, but f-12 is $20K. but how many people will ever own a 1797 half???

of course, queller's was a lot nicer than mine ... maybe it's time to upgrade...

I've got an 1836 bust dime in fine. And an 1804 half cent (though not totally busterific) in VG. I like them both. Not worth much but genuine and un-tinkered with. Got them when I was 15 and 16. Always liked them.

  • Draped bust half dollar 1802 PCGS-45

    or

Capped bust half dollar 1812/11 Large 8

    (can't make up my mind)
  • Sweet!

I actually collect holed early halves and that sounds like the holy grail to me.

I have several R.6 and R.7 Early Dollars, all very nice looking and many thoroughly original. It's hard to choose among them for a single ``best'' coin. Plus, I have several less rare ED's that are simply superb, which I'll mention:

    * I have 3 EF specimens of the BB-159 (1799 8x5), representing 2 different die states (two regular, one late) and all super lustrous (two iridescent luster, one frosty)
    * A pair of AU 1803 specimens (BB-252 Sm3, BB-255 Lg3). The Sm3 is very frosty, while the Lg3 is mildly PL. Both have nice streaky toning with nearly full cartwheels.
    * My BB-73 (1797 9x7 LgLtr) is a thoroughly original EF specimen with very attractive old-time toning.
    * My BB-81 (1798 15 St SmEag) is also a thoroughly original EF specimen with very attractive old-time toning.
    * My BB-82 (1798 13 St SmEag) is a borderline ChVF/EF specimen that has thoroughly original toning overlaying substantial remaining original mint frost.

This is my favorite one, because of the tab toning and the doubling on the chin and neck. Value, hmmm $350. 1825

I've kept my 1824/2/0 Bust Half, sometimes called "over various dates", but looks like a 4 over curl base 2 over a couple 0's to me. Coin is AU details net XF cleaned. The rest of them I sold.

Bust coins represent almost the entirety of my collection. I used to collect early dollars by die variety actively, but then became smitten with allure of the lustrous (though pricey) higher grade pieces. I've now sold off all of my R-8s and my lower grade R-7s and R-6s. (I've kept the AU's though.)

I now have a number of nice mint state specimens, but the one coin that seems to grab the most attention is the attached.
  • I have a few but this is probably my favorite an 1808 AU that is well struck for this two year type and the 17/13 CH.XF in the old holder a very close second (red & yellow near the date is scanner reflection). As for book value?? Who knows since they are both a little above average for the date/variety and I don't really care since I have no interest in selling them.

Currently I only have an EF45 half (1827, Square base 2). I don't have Overton, but I believe it is an O-129. I have had it since I started collecting, as a kid, in 1977. I cleaned it back then, but in the quarter-century since, it has retoned beautifully. Because of the cleaning and a rim bump, it will never slab without a bodybag or a net grade. But I don't really care. It's a sentimental coin for me, anyway. One of only three I kept since the very beginning. And it was my first "serious" collector coin. In 2027, when it turns 200 years old (and has spent 50 years in my possession), I will pass it on to an heir.

I have never owned a Mint State Bust coin or large cent, yet. The highest grade I have achieved in both so far is AU58.

I have found only one silver Bust coin with my detector so far: an 1829 half dime. It's holed, but hey- popping something like that out of the ground is a real rush, regardless of the condition!

    All right!

I've been waiting for a thread like this. Here's my bust quarter, an AU-53 according to PCGS as well as myself. My current favorite coin, and also my most recent acquisition (perhaps these two are related).

I wonder if my attempt to attach a file will be successful.

Compared to EVP, I'm almost embarassed to put up this thread, but I have a very nice Capped Bust small dentil dime (1831) in MS 64. Got it from Gordon Wrubel & paid well over sheet. It has an interesting series of die cracks and has the normal softness over the eagle'e left wing. It was dipped once and retoned a nice cobalt blue and amber. The coin is surprisingly free of marks.

I also picked up a nice Reeded Edge 1838 Half in MS 64 from David Weygandt (from Florida). Except for soft stars 1 - 3 due to misaligned dies, the strike is excellent. It's a white coin with lots of luster & is surprisingly free of contact marks on Miss Liberty's face, neck & bust.

Now if I could only find a small dentil Capped Bust quarter this nice......

If I was married & told my wife what I paid for either of these coins, she's serve me with divorce papers!

Those are all great coins guys, except for that Susan B AGONY thing. I love Bust coins, but only have the dimes so far. My favorite would probably be my 1804 in PCGS VG10, which is actually a fine+. Have been offered 4K by a dealer and turned it down. My 1800 is also nice PCGS 25 which looks closer to xf.

I have a couple of Capped Bust halves. This is by far my favorite one. The coin looks better than the pic though (...don't they all? lol). I will try to take another pic of it now that I have a decent digital camera.

I own the 1831 O-115 2nd edition plate coin, which is also the discovery coin for this die variety (Floyd Farley 1966), also the 1835 O-106 2nd edition plate coin. I own a fistful of draped bust halves, none really that spectacular, the best grade is an 1803 O-103 EF45.
