Tough date. AMAZING luster, although there's something a little odd above the IGWT. Also, the tick between the sun's rays. But I see nothing wrong at all on the reverse. Is it a 67? It must cost a PRETTY PENNY! But it's beautiful!

Are you really thinking of buying it, Russ?

    Russ,

Nice looking Walker. I do not see many marks on it. I am guessing maybe MS64/65? Grap it if it's a good price. And let us know what the grade is once you buy it.

The lustre graze at 3:00 obverse would give it an MS66 in my opinion.

    BNE,

Amazingly enough, that pup is an MS64, the grade I'm building the set in.image But, it's priced quite a bit above current market at $233.

*Thump* (Me falling out of my chair.) Jump on it, Russ! She's gorgeous! I wish my 65 Walkers looked half so nice.

Russ, it's probably priced at a high retail price. But if it's a nice coin why not? Sometimes we need to step up for a quality piece.

Remember the toned walker I posted the other day, well I sure didn't get a bargain on it. It was a 66 and I paid strong for it but I knew it was worth it to me to have a nice eye appealing one.

  • C'mon BNE. I hope you were teasing a bit. The left leg detail of the eagle is extremely weak and usually present with that is weakness in the upper wings. They appear shadowed on my monitor, so I can't say what is there or not there. There is some weakness in the lower part of the eagle's breast. As BNE said, there is some chatter in the obverse field.

BNE- With only 4 coins placed in the PCGS MS-67 holder, the '41-S is a true rarity in that grade.

I guess it is a function of how bad you need the coin today.

DCAM-- Well, I wasn't sure if Russ was pulling our leg on the purchase part, and thought he might have have been posting a picture of a swell coin for fun. But I have a bunch of 65's and this looks nicer. And the luster gives it exceptional eye appeal. Granted, I am not as familiar with the series as you are, so will certainly defer.

That being said, I don't think you can do any better in a "64," Russ. Me likes.image

    hey russ

there are some scattered tics on the coin but it looks like a good strike. actually, the blue-green tint my screen shows probably covers up some marks. i've looked at so many raw walkers trying to find a nice coin or two that my head hurts!! they always seem to have that smashed finger and stems look or too much leg and eagle rub. maybe that means all the nice ones are holdered already. that bugger has luster to spare , though. hard to figure how that design went out of fashion!!image

holy smokes, gotta go. this coin talk is so pointless.image

    BNE,

This is my primary goal in building this set; luster. At MS64, there are compromises that must be made; an extra tick here and there; a bit of weakness in the strike; or dipped to death dullness. I could have built this set in a week or two with no-luster coins. There are a zillion MS64's like that out there. I decided that every coin in the set would look like the one above, no matter how long it took.

The last one I got in:

I have 15 of the 20 coins so far, and all but two (that will be replaced) have this much luster.image

  • Great strike for a 41-S. More than I would pay, but then I'm not buying higher grade slabbed stuff. If you feel good about the price, jump on it because you won't find many 41-Ss with that strike, luster, and certified grade at a "reasonable" price.

Looks properly graded(chatter in the field) and has very nice luster and definately an above average strike for the date. Overall, very nice.
  • Nice coin Russ. I would say it's a PQ ms64++! It has very good eye appeal and looks like a winner to me.

Nice coin, Russ. I'm continually amazed at how nice 60 year old coins look. My "short" set was the 1986-2001 ASE. Great way to bring back a classic design. I'll take your "original" to my copies. Let's see how this sounds: "Got Walkers?" Not bad.

  • It is a nice MS64, but I think the seller is asking a bit much. It is a common coin in 64. I would look for a better deal.

So, did you end up getting it? I know you are working on a short set in MS64 grades; that is the reason I guessed MS64/65. It has a good shot at MS65. Let me know when you start upgrading your set, and need to sell off the 64's, as I only have a few 64 Walkers in my set.
  • Russ,

That's a cool Walker. It has really great luster and sweet color.

I really like your photography as well. The quality of your images gives me something to strive for.

Russ: Go for this 41-S walker here. You can get a more lustrous 41-S but you will sacrifice strike and strike is considered more important on the 41-S, 42-S, and 44-S dates than luster in the eyes of collectors and the only way you get both is go go up to a strong 65 or better.

This is a 41-S that appears very close to a 65, depending on how obvious the luster graze at 3 o clock is. The hand looks to be barely split and leg a touch weak but far beyond most 64's and many 65's in strike.

One of my two sets of walkers was just like yours which was a set done back in the 70's. I sold it back in '82 through B&M auctions. It broke my heart while padding my bank account immensly. Take your time in completing this set. There is much joy in the process.

Consider buying this 41-S even if you ultimately buy a 2nd one. It will always be good for trade for what you want in other dates at the very least.

  • Russ,
I have a 41S NGC 64 that is a lot weeker strike on the obverse, but has beautiful toning, this coin is a strong 64 compared to the strike on mine. Nice coin. PS give me some advice on buying a scanner that wont break me, im on a soldiers budget so that I can start scannin some my toners to share and get opinions on.
