Wouldn't a puttied coin show under a 10x loupe?

I read the thread...wouldn't a puttied coin show up under a 10x loupe? If not, why? The putty I know of leaves smudge marks or a greasy look on anything it touches. Wouldn't it dull the luster of an unc coin?
