Best price guide?

What's the best general price guide that's available to the general public? Not dealers nor high grade investors, I mean for the average collector. I know the prices in Coin Prices mag are prepared 2-3 months in advance, Krause is a year of so in arrears, the PCGS daily price listing seems high, dealer published listings in the mag's may be considered current but they too can be outdated by several weeks/months. What do you reference?
Thanks.

What coins and what grades are you interested in?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Let's start with large cents in f-au conditions. But in reality any early type coin in f-au condition, plus morgans, gold & comm's in ms63/65 condition.

How about Heritage? I have found their price guide pretty much reflects what coins are going for. They follow auction prices realized pretty close.

  • Numismedia; I go by 75% of the prices listed.

  • Coin World Trends
  • For up-to-the-minute prices on specific coins, it is very helpful to use Heritage's auction archives and Ebay's, too. You'll have to register to Heritage to search the archives, but it is free.

You can use Teletrades' "Price Guide" after you register to find actual prices of coins sold. (certified coins). Goes back 4 or 5 years and some coins have images.
  • Thanks for taking the time to respond.

At the shows I go to, the dealers seem to use the Grey Sheet and CoinWorld's Trends.

They use the Grey Sheet for the grades it shows and use Trends for the "mid-grades", such as XF-45, AU-55, MS-62, etc.

Check out the Southern Gold Society

  • I also like Coin World's Trends...they usually seem to be within 5% or so of what I usually pay.

Think of Coin World as an update since the Redbook was last published.
