1881-CC MS65 UDM

Does anyone know what this coin might be worth within a range, (realizing that you can't see it), and how much premium does a UDM usually command?

Also, Does anyone know what the ANACS pop for this one is?

Thanks very much for your time.

It all depends on how clean the coin is and how much contrast and the overall eye appeal. Many ANACS UDM coins are no deeper than an average PCGS DMPL so it really depends on the piece. If it's a solid/strong 65 with B&W contrast and exceptionally deep, it could go as high as $1400.00 - $1650.00 If it's a nothing special piece or a low end coin and just an average DMPL as far as depth, as low as $700.00 - $950.00 or anywhere in between.

Also, the thing with ANACS UDM's is that the seller always wants a premium for them and they are occasionally a tough sell unless they are really exceptionally deep or a date that doesn't normally come very deep or contrasted or whatever. The ANACS UDM's must really be taken on a case by case basis IMO to determine price.

Hi Dragon, thanks. This one happens to look like a Proof issue. It has 13" mirrors on the obv. and 14" on the rev. I measure depth by using a tape to measure the distance I can read printed material reflected in the mirrors. This is the only true method, IMO. It has very thick caked on frost with totally black and white contrast and the much desired "halo" around the face and chin. It also has beautiful yellow-gold around the rim on both sides. As I said, it really looks like a Proof coin and the eye appeal is off the charts. Thanks again.

P.S. I would still like to know the ANACS pop if anyone has that info. Thanks

Wow! If the face is fairly clean, that sounds like a piece I'd like to own.

    Morganluver,

Did you recently (w/in last 60 days or so) win an 1878 Vam 34 on eBay?

  • Dragons advice is right on the mark. I have an 84CC 65 UDM and an 83CC 65 UDM. I have tried twice to cross them over to PCGS with no luck. Fortunately I only paid ms64 money for them, they are not real high end but they are nice with extemely deep mirrors and nice frost. I have seen a big difference in the quality of some of these MS65 UDMs. They can be really beautiful.

The face is qiute clean with just a few tiny tics and luster grazes. There is some chatter in the fields as well. It has some of the most liquid, icy mirrors I've seen on a DMPL and I've seen a few.

I bought this coin in August of 99 and paid $200 over sheet for it.

I've tried to scan this coin, but as you may or may not know, scanning DMPLs is nearly impossible, and this one, with it's 13" obv. and 14" rev. super clear and watery mirrors is worse than impossible. It looks 1000% better in person. In this case, I think a digital camera would do a much better job, but I don't have the right camera to do it properly. I showed this coin(as well as a few others) to one of the graders at NGC last week and he really liked it, so much so, that I have decided to keep it. Sorry if I seemed to have dangled a carrot, but this one is just too nice and I would probably be very sorry down the road for letting it go. If anyone is going to the FUN show and would like to see it, just page me and I'd be happy to do so. I also have an 86-P 65UDM with super contrast...another tough one with these characteristics Thanks.
