1942 Merc Dime Double Die

I'm excited! I bought a bunch of Merc dimes over the weekend and found a 1942 double die. I'll try to get a scan of it when I get home from work. Any one have any info on these?

  • I think you're going to be disapointed. The mercury dime series is the most heavily strike doubled of all U.S. coins.
These are not from a doubled die.
There is no premium for these.

Thats the sound of someone bursting anothers bubble.

    Ouch.

Maybe ya coulda let em down a LITTLE easier?
Like.....Uh,...Very many machine doublings for that date so....dont get your hopes up too high now.
May be a tiny premium for the doubling in this case. Most collectors pay zero premium for that type of doubling though too.

  • I just checked in David W. Lange's The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes, and he has this to say about varieties for the 1942 business strike Mercury Dime:

"The principal variety for this issue is a doubled die obverse, better known to collectors as the 1942/1 overdate."

Unfortunately, unless you have uncovered a 42/1 (this is very noticeable), you probably have strike doubling.
