Today's Parsippany Coin Show- a nice report

Here is the report from the Parsippany, NJ coin show that took place today.

When I first got there, I headed around and glanced at stuff- went through some junk boxes of darkside stuff and went on my merry way (my goal was a PCGS walker). After going around for a little bit and deciding the show wasn't for ANYONE the slightest bit chlostrophobic, I found a nice darkside box, $.15/each. As I was concentrating on the coins, DaveG found me and said Hi, scarring the crap out of me image We said hi, shook hands, and started talking as I found my 7th coin to be close to a buck... I was hoping for a 5c discount... even better... I was told to get 3 more for a total of 10 coins for a dollar--- COOL! I found a really nice Israeli coin, and the Braddick of all Braddick darkside coins image

Then, Dave gave me the basic run-through of the show and pointed out some dealers... we then decided it was time for some show and tell... so we went outside and found a place (the floor) to sit... I showed him some of my measly possessions as he brought out some stunning seated coinage, gold coinage, and world gold/silver... he has some magnificent stuff! image

As we headed back in, we went to a dealer he recommended who had stuff mostly out of my price range, but was nice to talk to image Since Dave was thinking about a few coins, we decided to split up for a bit and I went around a little more, looking at the walkers I found. Unfortunately, the only walker I really liked in my price range has 4 hits on the sun, which, in my opinion, kept a 64 from being a 66. The 64s I saw seemed mostly low end and quite baggy- a real shame.

Morgans were in incredible abundance- I saw some gorgeously toned ones, as well as the butt-ugliest morgan I have ever seen- a SEGS 64 with toning worse than even that MS68 Casper Coins has that we have ridiculed numerous times... it REALLY needed a dipping... or two... or three! I ran out of time when I wanted to see an 1880-S Morgan in an NGC-62, although it looked 64PL... dang! I think I missed out image

When I was walking around I did find an awesome 10% clipped lincoln (1960) that is all purple so I got it for $2 imageimageimage and a cool medieval hammered coin for $3 image Last time, when I looked for a nice buff, I decided to wait and get one online... guess that is going to happen again image

I'm sure DaveG will have something to chime in about... it was really nice meeting him image (unfortunately, TomB couldn't make it image)

Over and Out,

Jeremy image

PS- other than Hall and Lawrence, are there any other major dealers buying/selling modern coins?

Let me start by saying that Jeremy is being too kind about my (relatively) modest collection, although I'm rather proud of it.

Once again, the Parsippany show was crowded, perhaps even more crowded than last month. It's a huge contrast to 1993-94, when you could roam the aisles without bumping into very many people.

As usual, Morgans were in abundance. I've never been that sensitive to slabbed Walkers, but since Jeremy was looking for one, I paid attention. He's right, there weren't that many around, even of the common dates.

As at last month's show, there was a lot more gold (mostly bullion-related) around than in the past. I introduced Jeremy to Tom Hyland, who's a really nice guy and the bourse chair for the GSNA annual show. Tom had a bunch (10-15) of inexpensive coins in first or second-generation PCGS slabs. I almost bought one, just to have the slab. Tom said he recently picked up a large (for him) collection of mostly recent coins. Tom also had a NGC-45 (I think) 1859-S quarter eagle. I think that's the first time I've ever seen a live pre-Civil War SF quarter eagle. If you're interested, Tom will be at Baltimore - I encourage you to stop by and at least say hello.

As I was cruising by Bob Beels' table (he's president of the GSNA and shares a table with TomB when he's there), I saw someone showing him a set of six NGC-slabbed Oregon Trail commems, with the most amazing orange/red toning. The toning was so bright I could see it ten feet away! WOW!

There were a lot of new dealers there today - guys who weren't there, say a year ago. Which is a real contrast to the last seven or eight years, when I would see the same dealers there month after month.

As usual, I didn't see that much that interested me. I did see an 1840 eagle in NGC-40 with nice original surfaces, but it was a little too baggy for my taste. I really like those coins in 45 or 50 (when I can afford them).

Edited to add: On the whole, PCGS slabs were in really short supply. I mostly saw NGC slabs; ANACS and the other guys were in the distinct minority.

<< <i>Tom had a bunch (10-15) of inexpensive coins in first or second-generation PCGS slabs >>

And a LOT of really expensive slabs image

There was also a guy selling almost only TCTS (?- Conder...) and ACG slabs... passed on his table... then there was the dealer who, when I asked to see a walker, gave me this funny look... turned out he was staring at my zipper pull- an Alien from Roswell... he could have just asked instead of making me go "HUH???"

I'd sure as hell hope he's proud of it... darn nice collection indeed! image

There was also another dealer on whom I passed... he had about 3 plastic cases of stuff... piled into one case... I don't know how anyone could find a coin in there- my room is actually tidier image!!!!

The schedule is always in Coin World under shows in the back. I keep meaning to go as I am in New Jersey 3 out of 4 weekends.

    Thanks for the review

Thanks Jeremy, for the report. I always enjoy reading the coin show posts. It's almost as much fun reading about going to a coin show as it is going to a coin show. Almost...
