imageI have heard it possible to get a discount from PCGS with a bulk submission on modern coins. Does anyone know where can I find out how to do this.

Thanks, Charlie

I believe it needs to be a minimum of 100 of the same coin to qualify, and that the price is $8 per.

$8 per coin is the lowest per Rick Montgomery that PCGS will go...I even kinda winked and nudged a little to say that some of the big boys get cheaper and he said that $8 is lowest rate possible. I do a lot of biz with one of the larger submitters of bulk and he insists that $8 is the lowest. I would say so far that Rick M has been very forthright and and honest with me and I have no reason to doubt him now.

For bulk PCGS generally likes 200 or more coins same denomination and same minimum grade. Even though I have actually done 50 coins a couple of times, most of my invoices are around 140-200 coins. This means you can put Washington Quarters on an invoice at minimum MS65 with Lincolns at minimum MS66. Also MS seperate from Proof...even if same denomination.

You don't prepay on bulk as well, so if you submit 200 coins and 180 of them grade be prepared to pay at least $1440 for the coins and that is only if none get a better grade. For example if you submit Washington Quarters at MS65 minimum you pay $8 for any MS65, $12 for any MS66, and $15 for any MS67. Obviously you would be happy to pay more, since you are getting a better grade. Which is kind of funny, but part of the game I guess.

Also, some people think that you can get $5 bulk rate this is often confused with the minimum fee structure for bulk submissions. This means that the cheapest you will pay for a bulk submission is $5 for each coin submitted whether it gets holdered or not. This is to keep people from just submitting rolls of bankwrapped stuff and making PCGS do all the work. For example, if you submit 100 coins the least amount the invoice would come to is $500 ($5 times 100 coins submitted) Even if only 10 coins met your minimum grade, you would not pay $80 but the $500. This works out to about 62.5% needed to overcome this...cause even if 62 coins out of 100 get graded you would still pay the $500 because it is more than the $496 (62 times $8) you would be charged at $8 per holdered coin.

IF you have any questions you can PM as I have done quite a bit of bulk...or you can try Tu Ho at ext. 142 she handles bulk for PCGS.

    Hope that helps.

imageOK, as I understand it, in order to qualify for bulk submission, the coins need to be the same date/denomination, not just a large number of coins.

    Thanks, Charlie

I was told that you can only have 5 different dates (no word on if a 1990-p & 1990-D count at 1 or 2 dates).

I've been told by a forum member that PCGS will charge as low as $6 on 500 coins. He said he did this.

While Rick M might say $8 a coin is the lowest, I have a STRONG feeling that if I wanted to submit 10,000 state quarters I could get the done at under $8 a coin.

I think the minimum at NGC is $6.50.

    That's a good explaination Morris.

I didn't know dealers didn't get charged for their "mistakes" (when the min grade wasn't met).

I'd get free submissions all the time that way.

And I would be more than willing to pay for a higher grade (I didn't know they did that either). Maybe that's the reason behind the missing PR70's - they only show up when a submitter is willing to pay enough.

    Thanks for the info

    Actually, they do; $5.

And, considering PCGS has graded around 10,000 proof state quarters dated 2002 without a single PR70 yet, obviously no one in the universe has paid enough image

I bet if PCGS graded the first 2002 state quarter in PR70, a collector with a submission of 20 coins or less would get it!! Just a hunch that bid volumes does not equal PR70's at PCGS.
