Is this Morgan AT or real?

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
1898-O Morgan Toned Beauty MS-63. I was looking at this one last night, and even thought about taking a shot at it, but my ignorance of these things kept my finger off the trigger.

Is this fake toning, or real toning? If it's real, what type is it? What causes it?

I vote AT on this one. Way too much liquid involved to leave the center untouched like that.

As always with my toning replies, wait for somebody who knows what they are talking about to respond.

My guess is it was created by soaking an album in a sulphur solution and putting the coin(s) in. Seems like they didn't dry out the album enough first. IMHO

  • That one is more fake than Bozo's nose.

But, what makes it fake? What are the telltale signs?

From what I've learned on here:

    1. The fact that the pattern looks the same on the obverse and the reverese
    2. The splotchy nature of the toning on the obverse
    3. The sudden stop of the color on both the obverse and the reverse
    4. Just the instant gut feel when I saw it

I don't like the distinct blotchiness of the two color scheme and the obv. center is too white.

My gut reaction is that it is toned, based on experience more than anything. The toning pattern looks unnatural. I agree with relayer it looks like it was put into a soaked whitman album.

To me the pattern obliviously indicates a liquid flow as opposed to the creep of a reactive contaminant “naturally” present in the storage media.

Just ain't supposed to be no water in an album

Here is a link to one I own with similar colors, blue, red and gold. The blue extends to the right eagle feather and the red to the breast and left eagle feather. The one you have shown us looks it was intentionally made to look like tab toning. That is not the usual tab toning you see on a Morgan.

    Mike,

I like yours much better. Not sure if it's the right word, but it looks "silky" compared to the one in the auction.

That guy has been selling coins the last several weeks that were in AG/Good but had rainbow toning. They look like they were stored in a coin envelope and developed the tone that way. That's what the 98-O Morg looks like. Call that AT or original because coin envelopes are collector tools but I don't think it would pass @ PCGS.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Placid -

I bought an 1887 from him last month, he offered it outside of ebay after his reserve wasn't met.

And his sales would probably increase if he could take good pictures, because the one I got looked a lot better than his picture did (and usually it's the other way around).

I don't know if that's a compliment to the coin, or a complaint about his pictures. In this case it's probably a little of both.
