There is a US coin series that can be completed in MS64 for less cost than just one particular coin in the series in MS66. (Coin world readers are disqualified because the answer in in this week issue.)
And it's a "real" series, not a fluky SBA series or something tiny like that.
I found it amazing that you could trade off two points of MS grade on a single coin in exchange for the entire series in 64.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

A few that come to mind:
twenty cent pieces ($75k difference in the 76-CC)
washington quarters (perhaps, with the recent 32-D sale)
franklin halves w/ fbl's (with the first 53-S result)
mercs w/ fb's (w/ that 19-D result)
walkers ($100k difference in the 21-S)
seated dollars (hypothetically - the 70-S difference would exceed $500k)
trade dollars ($150k difference in the 73-CC)
peace dollars (big money in the key date in 66)
These are just the MS coins. Throw in the proofs and there are many many more:
Lib nickels (1913)
Barber dimes (94-S)
Trade dollars (85)
Bust Dollars (1804)
Shield nickels (67 w/ rays)
Reeded edge halves (38-O)
Just about any set with a single great rarity in it (or multiple condition rarities) will yield that result.
oh yeah, i didn't read coin world, don't know if this is the answer you were thinking of and just got home after being out of town all weekend. what did i miss and who was this weekends whipping boy!!!???

TRUTH
The note I read in CW didn't say it was the ONLY series but I incorrectly interpreted it that way. But even so, I'm fascinated that it would be true for so many series, especially some big ones! The CW note was talking about Franklins (non-FBL).
I wouldn't have been so surprised if it would have been for a "single coin" in 67 or above since they can be so tough.
I'll try to salvage a little self-respect on this thread by commenting that it certainly does make a point about condition rarity.

It s interesting to find out things about other coin series that are not followed at all. Sure alot of people know what the Keys are but do they know what the more common coins are worth ? Or even if the Keys are worth what some of the Semi Keys are worth ?
Decent Question IMO.
Ikes qualify too -- in fact for price of one key MS66 Ike, you could do the whole series in MS65, not just MS64. And throw in all the proofs in PR69DCAM too.
I'd rather have the set myself. But as a dealer just the one coin.

No disrespect meant toward SBAs, it's certainly as legitimate as any other series.
