Well, I planned on going to this show but really didn't feel like driving the 2 hours to get there. But as soon as I walked in I was like a little kid and woke up. I'm into original classics and mainly Barbers but didn't really see any decent ones, all mainly dipped and retoned with that goldish brown funky look IMO.
But I did find a couple things that struck me. I cannot stress enough to new people in the hobby if your collecting for the enjoyment buy quality and if you need to step up and pay for a very eye appealing piece and can afford it, to do so.
I found plenty of so called deals at sheet price and IMO they were junk.
I only bought 2 coins and I for sure stepped up on these but I was looking at them driving home to where I almost got in a wreck. The one that made me do this is a 1936 pcgs 66 Walker. I used to collect these but haven't seen too many with nice subtle color and full luster to boot. A very eye appealing piece. Now here's where market grading comes in. I know these Walkers from years ago and actually I see this as a technical 65 but the eye appeal they bumped it a point.
Just thought I'd share this. I will try to get the best scan I am able to but it will take a while. Also met a board member and bought a 1886 Morgan from him bag toned on both sides and very pretty. These never used to impress me but I now appreciate the originality of these. I bought the Walker at the table next to him. I'm not mentioning who he is as he might not want me to. But a heck of a nice guy even though he still took my money.

Nice coin, I love those rainbows on Morgans, I just wish I could find one on a Peace.
Really pretty colors as well. I would say good buy at almost any price, within reason.
Got any Toned Peaces?

<< <i>Tonelover, I'll go ahead and dip it. But will you buy it afterwards? >>
He'll want both
1) Traffic on I-80 between SF & Sacto really sucks. It's not so much that there's so many cars, it's just that there's no lane discipline whatsoever. It was impossible to maintain any sort of constant speed, because you'd always come across some lane blockers to mess you up.
2) In the slabworld, there was an overwhelming number of Morgan dollars there, and rather a dearth of everything else. I'm not into Morgans at all, and didn't end up buying anything there.
3) I did see the coin the original poster purchased. I was admiring it under the glass when my non-collecting friend remarked "what's that gunk all over it"? Toned coin collectors must really hate showing off their collections to the layfolk. I can show someone my blast-white Lafayette buck and they'll be very impressed, but showing someone a heavily toned Morgan is likely to illicit revulsion.
4) PCGS and NGC slabs were in great abundance; a fair number of ANACS and ICG slabbed coins were there as well. I didn't see a single SEGS. The only ACG and PCI slabs I saw were in one dealer's junk box .
5) The show was $2, I got a buck off coupon from Ken Barr, and they gave me a Mississippi quarter at the door. I would say I absolutely got my 75c worth out of the show, even though I didn't buy anything.
