If I were to come across a huge old collection...

What dealers do you know that might make good partners to buy the whole thing out. Say it has a bunch of old 1800 proof coins of a wide variation, old US Currency etc. I would be curious to know if any of you have had any experience with a situation like this. I can probably find a "money partner" locally, but it still might not be enough...hypothetically speaking image

  • I would strongly recommend my local dealer - Sarasota Rare Coin Gallery. If you want info, feel free to PM me.

Sell them on eBay with a nice long story on how "Grandpa" had collected and save them for years and years.

If you're confident enough in your ability to assess the collection properly, and can find some "money" locally to back you, buy it yourself. If you don't think you will have the money to buy the whole collection and the estate would like to disperse the whole collection at one shot, you can contact any number of larger dealerships and they will take care of the whole deal for you, and you could work out terms, or a finders fee for the collection.
I know of a dealer who worked something out with Bowers, where he would keep certain pieces, and they would keep certain pieces of a local collection. I don't know ALL the details, but it sounded as if the deal went off without a hitch.
I'd try to do the deal with a local partner first though. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

Depending on what you've stumbled on I might be willing to go in with you! I'm only about an hour from you! (outside of mansfield)
  • I'm going to get a look at the whole thing tomorrow or Monday, I'll keep you informed. Thanks for the advice so far image

Contact Heritage. They'll put up the money and sell the collection. You can work a percentage for yourself without taking any risk..

Legend is always looking for high quality deals - and has the backing to fund it!
  • From what I have seen so far, it is superb material, but I want to see it all before I jump the gun. I get the feeling that it is going to be far too big for me to handle myself unless the guy will let me act as an auction coordinator for him. I think, however, that he wants me to show him the money LOL image

    Here is what you do...

1- Buy ONLY the circulated wheaties
2- Write a novel about the puppy who collected them for many years
3- place them in an antique-looking (styrafoam) chest
4- Get an ugly model to stand beside the coins
    5- take a picture
6- you're ready for eBay image
