Are Mercs underrated or what?

OuthaulOuthaul Posts: 7,440 ✭✭✭✭✭
I seem to be able to snap up high-end PCGS (old rattler) Mercs for under twenty bucks! Case in point, 1944-D MS-64 PCGS 1st gen holder I got for $17.00 including shipping! This is just one of many that I've bought recently. Other grades I've bought for under twenty are 65/66. I don't even collect Mercs, but I just can't resist at these prices!

Are these sucker's coins or am I lucky?

Cheers,

Bob

WOW! Nice toning on that one!
  • I have spent some time and effort on Merc's lately myself, having completed an EF or better set, with the exception of the G4 16-d. I am still seeking a 21-D and a higher quality 21-P.

I am considering starting a certified short set considering where prices are these days.

    I agree 100%, I therefore have 700 PCGS/NGC Mercs in my collection.
I believe it to be among the most underrated series, and my favorite.

I recommend concentrating on these in PCGS/NGC.

    1926 MS63FSB+
    1931D or S MS63FSB+
    1939S MS64FSB+

These are the most underrated in my opinion.

    Happy collecting.,
    Brian.

If you are ever inclined to part with a 21 and 21-D, you know where to find me! image

I probably could not afford high grade slabs, but a few common circs would make me a happy guy!

  • Or just buy the 45-p in fullbands
PCGS has only graded a total of 99 in FB total

    Bob:

Under Rated. Well I do not know if that is so but you can sure get some real deals on nice Mercs if you look around.

Tim mentioned the Population on the 45P FB coins which is impressive considering the mintage of the date. There are a few in the series that have fewer MS examples though. The 19S leads the pack with just 62 FB coins graded. Closely following are the two 1927 issues, the 27D and the 27S, with 82 and 89 respectively. Now that brings us to the Extremely Rare 16D in which 247 Mint State FB examples have been graded. Hype does work in the Coin business.

Well onto the $40 Buck and less coins that have been found. Enjoy.

The 39D and 40P cost $20 bucks or less.

I think certain dates in the series are underrated. The late date pieces are everywhere for around $20. They'll never be worth diddly in a monetary sense. That doesn't stop me from picking them up every once in a while either!!! image

proof mercs that are deeply mirrored cameoed and/or monstewr nicely toned with great eye appeal are grossly undervalued AND UNAPPRECAQITED

you hear it all the ti9me oh that coin has gone up so much it is not worth a premium!!!!!!! well it is if it looks like these two coins!! but since coins liek these you never see much i guess i can see why they are misunderstood and unbderappreciatred you cant apprecaite somethning you never see or know little about

The 41P is a 65FB PCGS coin. The 39D is a 65 PCGS coin and the 40P is a Raw coin the dealer had graded MS64. The raw coin is better IMO.

Lately some Real Deals have been available. In the last Heritage Auction 5 MS66FB Mercs from the forties were bought in the $35.00 range. Actually the way Heritage combines some coins in lots I was forced to buy them to get what I really wanted. Also a couple of early thirties dimes went for about 50% of gray sheet bid. Had to pay almost bid for a 31P FB coin though. Demand as usual dictates Price.

Its really hard to Imagine that these forties common date coins were bringing $150 per coin in MS65FB in the Mid 80's. Heck now they are a $25.00 coin if you are lucky.

Cameo Mercs (or Walkers for that matter) are VERY rare. I've been doing this "coin thing" for 11 years now and I still have yet to see one in person.

Too bad that FB's are so pushed so much. There are many dates that are just out and out rare. 1919-S is the hardest date to find in MS I think (it used to be anyway). Early Merc's with a good strike (but not FB) are a steal at the present levels. If you put together a set from 1916-1931 with good enough strike that it doesn't effect the eye appeal you've got a GREAT and RARE set of coins....at a reasonable cost.

    Jom:

Its still right up there for sure. I think, outside of Heritage Auctions, I have seen about 3 or 4 For Sale in the last year or so. Man I had a heck of a time finding a 25D. Finally one was bought from a Board member that was kind enough to give me a shot at it. 23S is Tough also. Few people seem to want to part with them.

Your Reference to the 1916 to 1931 Dates is Great. But Please do not let too many people know this. image

i wouldn't say the 40's mercs are underrated...

under $20 for one in a slab...the downside is virtually non-existent...

after all, these inexpensive but nice MS coins got into their $30 holders because someone was hoping to...well..we all know the story...

  • I agree with some of the other comments that the 40's Mercs are not underrated, in the grades that you are buying them in. I can pick up nice Gem examples, that if sent off would grade MS65 FB for $22-30 with a few exceptions like the 45-P, at the local dealers shop here. They are fairly common. When you add in the cost of shipping and for a non full band coin, it's easier for me to buy them sight seen for that price locally. But, like everyone said, as long as you enjoy them and they have nice eye appeal, go for it, I just wouldn't expect a runup in price anytime soon IMO.

    Hi All,

I was thinking the same thing as I put my check in the mail to board member Fantisiize today for two Mercuries in NGC MS-66 at $17 a piece! I have an almost complete well circulated set (missing only the 16D) and thought this would be a good way to see some higher grade coins to see if I like them enough to collect seriously.

    Thanks for an enjoyable thread,
