What do you guys think of this 1897 IHC I got in today?

The scratch appearing on the obverse is on the holder, not the coin. It's slabbed as an EF-40. I think the grading service might have been a bit conservative on that, but these are new to me, so that's just by using the WAG method. What do the IHC people think?

the necklace and the lack of detail in the ribbon (there are 4 diamonds in the ribbon that I cannot see in the picture).
All-in-all, a very nice XF example.
When did you start collecting indians, Russ?!? You need to stay out of these because they are very expensive and
I have been trying to buy them all to save peeps like yourself from having to spend the money on them (they are
also very old, covered in germs and have been proven by the feds to cause cancer!)

I'm not. I just got an unbeatable, screaming, amazing, fantastic, wonderful, incredible, outstanding deal on this one from a board member.

XF seems right. The ribbon has separation from the lower hair, and even if the diamonds aren't all visable (can't tell) that unmarked cheek gives it a big push.
Overall ,really nice coin though.
What sevice is the holder?
Raw, cleaned, recolored IHCs are par for the course on ebay. 97 is a nice year, semi-common. Looks like it may have some luster which usually disappears with cleaning.

I'm sorry Sir. I didn't quite get that. Could you describe the deal using some superlatives?

Let me guess, was it CoinDr, DCAMFranklin, or jmwarren that sold it to you?

<< <i>Looks a little pink, though its hard to tell from the image especially since your new at photographing copper. >>
toothpuller,
Nope, in real life it's not pink. There's still some red that comes through, though. I think the pink appearance is associated with the second part of your sentence. And, yes, it does have quite a bit of luster left. I need to work on my lighting for these. I'm used to shooting silver or proof coinage and the same setup just doesn't seem to work as well with copper, especially brownish copper.

It's PGS!

The coin has not been whizzed, cleaned or obviously messed with. The unusual color in the photo is an artifact of Russ's photography for this coin. It is a nice, solid XF with (in my humble opinion) excellent eye appeal for a circulated IH.
Accurately and conservatively graded by one of the more reputable, though lesser known, grading services, whose goal is to promote collector interest in FE and IH cents.
Nice coin Steve, I really like the way the full, smooth cheek reflects the light in that Pushkin slab.
After experimenting with my Two Cent pieces and this IHC, I think you're right. The Reveals are great for capturing proofs and colorlful coins, but they just don't cut it with copper (excepting late-date proof copper). If I remember correctly, don't you use OTT's for your great shots?

Russ -- I bought the Ott lights on a whim, mostly because I needed lighting that would fold up securely for a trip to Long Beach. Turns out they're the best all around lights I've used, especially for RD copper with solid surfaces. Both Lakesammman and myself have found they can be too intense for some RBs that 'absorb' some of the light, resulting in some odd looking surface patterns that don't really exist.

Almost like cigarettes, huh Russ???
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Always looking for nice type coins
