What do you guys think of this 1897 IHC I got in today?

The scratch appearing on the obverse is on the holder, not the coin. It's slabbed as an EF-40. I think the grading service might have been a bit conservative on that, but these are new to me, so that's just by using the WAG method. What do the IHC people think?

  • Does it look grainy in real life or is it just the picture? if its not grainy than its a very nice coin

It's just the picture. I'm not very good yet at shooting copper.

  • Given the picture, I'd say the grade is spot-on. Note the lack of details in the feathers, the wear on the beads on
the necklace and the lack of detail in the ribbon (there are 4 diamonds in the ribbon that I cannot see in the picture).

All-in-all, a very nice XF example.

When did you start collecting indians, Russ?!? You need to stay out of these because they are very expensive and
I have been trying to buy them all to save peeps like yourself from having to spend the money on them (they are
also very old, covered in germs and have been proven by the feds to cause cancer!) imageimageimageimageimageimage

Wear on the feathers and the ribbon on the obverse make this a xf-45. However this grade is very attractive and collectible in IHC's. I can't see the ribbon very well, but their should be 4 diamonds, and it looks like their is some wear on them too.

I'm not. I just got an unbeatable, screaming, amazing, fantastic, wonderful, incredible, outstanding deal on this one from a board member.image

I like the full, clean cheek -- unusual for a circulated IH. You do realize these don't come with accented hair of any kind, don't you Russ?

XF seems right. The ribbon has separation from the lower hair, and even if the diamonds aren't all visable (can't tell) that unmarked cheek gives it a big push.

    Looks like a whizzed AU,thus the 40 net.If its a ANACS slab,it should read NetEF40 cleaned.
    Overall ,really nice coin though.

    What sevice is the holder?
  • Looks a little pink, though its hard to tell from the image especially since your new at photographing copper. Pink on a copper coin, especially one of that grade, frequently means its been recolored.
Raw, cleaned, recolored IHCs are par for the course on ebay. 97 is a nice year, semi-common. Looks like it may have some luster which usually disappears with cleaning.

I'm sorry Sir. I didn't quite get that. Could you describe the deal using some superlatives? imageimage

    toothpuller,

Nope, in real life it's not pink. There's still some red that comes through, though. I think the pink appearance is associated with the second part of your sentence.image And, yes, it does have quite a bit of luster left. I need to work on my lighting for these. I'm used to shooting silver or proof coinage and the same setup just doesn't seem to work as well with copper, especially brownish copper.

The coin has not been whizzed, cleaned or obviously messed with. The unusual color in the photo is an artifact of Russ's photography for this coin. It is a nice, solid XF with (in my humble opinion) excellent eye appeal for a circulated IH.image

Accurately and conservatively graded by one of the more reputable, though lesser known, grading services, whose goal is to promote collector interest in FE and IH cents.image

The GE reveal bulbs, which I think Russ uses with great success, gave a filtered look to some coppers when I experimented with them. And even the natural white light I find best for MS copper can overpower some RBs. I've come to the conclusion 2 or 3 different lighting setups are needed for copper, depending on the tone and texture of the surface.

Nice coin Steve, I really like the way the full, smooth cheek reflects the light in that Pushkin slab.

    shylock,

After experimenting with my Two Cent pieces and this IHC, I think you're right. The Reveals are great for capturing proofs and colorlful coins, but they just don't cut it with copper (excepting late-date proof copper). If I remember correctly, don't you use OTT's for your great shots?

I would like to go on record as saying that IH cents are one of the most beautiful of all US coins IMO and underpriced and underrated in all grades of MS64RD or better.

BTW, I'd like to note that the above was a gift from the owner of this wonderful grading service.image

Dragon -- I obviously agree, just wish they were still as underpriced as 5 or 6 years ago. Your 1906 from the B&M sale certainly appreciated well!

Russ -- I bought the Ott lights on a whim, mostly because I needed lighting that would fold up securely for a trip to Long Beach. Turns out they're the best all around lights I've used, especially for RD copper with solid surfaces. Both Lakesammman and myself have found they can be too intense for some RBs that 'absorb' some of the light, resulting in some odd looking surface patterns that don't really exist.

  • Nice coin but

Congrads Russ!! Very nice! the IHC is my favorite. the 1860s and and 70s are a little pricie in that grade. I got my 77 earlier this summer.
