MERCURY COLLECTORS

Well it looks like I have been pasted by Dennis again(I might have to get a second job)
and at the rate Al and Jim are moving (I know I need a second job to keep up).
Looks like I am going to wait for the fun show in Orlando before adding any more
I hope it's a good show I plan to be there in person with the better half,so
I better start saving money now.Maybe now would be a good time to sell some
of that worthless stock I own.

  • Tim,
I am planning on the Fun Show as well, maybe we can hook up. I hope that there are a few dimes come back form pcgs that I can add as well. But, one thing is for sure, your set will by far outshine my set once you are finished. You have some very powerful coins in there. NICE COINS! Sorry forgot to honk as I went by....lol.. "HONK-HONK"...image

    Hi Tim and Dennis,

After reading your post I spent some time looking at both of your sets before I replied. Dennis, you have an outstanding collection and congratulations on moving up a spot. Tim, Wow!!! Dennis is right, there are some VERRRYYY powerful coins in your set. You are both collecting the same set in different ways with different objectives and having fun, and yet there is a very friendly competition to keep it interesting. This is one of the reasons I was drawn to the Mercury collectors. You help each other, even when you know it will cost you on the "points"! I hope that some day I get to meet you both and see both sets in person. I have truely enjoyed being involved with you two, Fairlaneman, Grip, and the other Mercury guys. I just have one newby question. Why are we Mercury collectors banished to troll island? imageimageimage

    Dennis and Tim,

It's not definite yet, but I 'm going to try to make it to the FUN show as well. I'll be ready for a vacation and some warm weather by then (we just finished our 4th day with temperatures not getting above 32 degrees imageisgustimage. Guess I'd better start checking airfares and hotels for reservations soon, and cut back on spending so I'll have some money for coins, preferably Mercs. image

It would be good to meet some other Merc collectors and other board members.

Really though I cannot see why this Coin is in a 65 Holder. It is Really Nice when viewed in person. Nice little Original Coin IMO.

Just another Comment about the Folks here. All have been very Fair with thier descriptions and recommendations about a Coin they have For Sale. I really think Everyone has the best intentions with reguard to Dealings with Registry Members. We, IMO, are a Very Lucky bunch of Collectors. image

Hope you All get to Hook Up at Fun. If I was Not so far out in the Sticks I would Really try to get there also. Being there would be Great Fun at Fun.

Nice coins guys. Ken and Dennis stop the bickering or I'll send you both to your rooms with no supper or coins to look at.

  • My, oh my. What purtty coins you all gentlemen have. I think some of them would look real nice in my collection little ol' collection. Wouldn't you all like to donate some nice purtty, shiny dimes to a purtty southern belle? (smiling as sweetly as I possibly can image )

But in all seriousness, I really do enjoy reading all the Merc posts on these boards. I may not always respond, but be rest assured, I do read each and every thread that even hints at being about Mercs. Afterall, that was my first true love in the coin world and will always be my truest love.

I do plan on being at the FUN show, but don't know yet when we will be there. We only live about 2 hours away, so we generally drive down on Saturday morning and return Saturday afternoon. Not sure yet what we will be doing for this upcoming show, but I am looking forward to it. I always have a great time at FUN. My credit cards and bank account don't have that good of a time, but I do.

It is a favorite of mine as well, but due to the fact that I started on Mercs first, I dont think, just shy of winning the BIG lottery, I can live long enough to put a set of those nice coins together. But I do appreciate them as well as Mercs.

    Dennis,

Seated dimes start looking pretty good at VF. You don't have to have 65's.. I don't know if you could find 65's for all of the dates even if you had the money. In fact I know there are a few where no UNCS are known. I collect most of them in XF and AU with some 62's and 63's.. They are really pretty in nice au and above. I just picked up a 1888 in 62 yesterday at the Indiana show.

Jon You especially. I still want some more when Funds Allow. image

Don't let these Merc Guys in on these also. Heck none will be available if they start after them also. One thing for sure though the Seated talk would Really pick up.

Well guess what, I love Bust dimes too.

    Jon
  • python,
The only MS65 seated dime I have owned, I bought for resale. The price increase from 64 to 65 in the common date years is way to much. For the most part you can get a NICE 64 for @ 325-375, a 65 will set you back 750+. Ive never gotten into that "high grade" stuff, my favorite coins were my 1845-O in AU50, 1859-S in XF45 and a few other rarities.

<<I wish I could afford seated dimes in 65...wow now talk about someting worth talking about...WOW..LQQK..A set of Seated dimes in 65 holders....>>

Good luck.... Alot of dates your not going to find in gem unc and others your not even gonna find in unc. I think its totally possible to complete a set w/ the common stuff in UNC, the semikeys in XF-UNC(depending on price & avalibility) and they key dates in F-AU (i say fine because try finding a 74-cc in VF, all the other keys would be nice in VF+). Anyways, this is my goal for my set. How long will it take to complete? YEARS... But you have varities to hunt in the "down time" image

I'm kicking myself for not buying an 1876-P dime in PCGS MS66 on Friday. The dealer wanted $1150, which seemed fair, but I had already bought several coins and didn't have enough cash left for it. It had a needle-sharp strike and was semi-PL. I always remember the nice ones like that that got away.image

Al, the FUN show is January 9-12 in Orlando. I was checking airfares and hotels, and I can get a round trip ticket from Denver for $330, and hotels range from $37-$78 with my AARP card. Not too bad; I just have to make sure it doesn't conflict with my work schedule.

    OK Ken,

You're in deep trouble now. How did you infiltrate someone into my secret underground bunker? You bribing someone on my security staff? Getting secret pictures of my Mercs too? Heck, I don't even have pictures of my Mercs. All seriousness aside, I was just about to have a little toast to my newest additions! Can anyone tell the others what kind of uniform I am wearing?

Ken and Dennis, nice pictures of nice dimes.

No one has said anything about Barber dimes, how come? Now can we get back to Mercs?

Good news atleast! image 1876, are by far one of the easiest dates to find fully struckimage. Now the bad news. Your gonna need a Type I and Type II reverse. image

  • Barbers? What about Roosevelts? Aw, I know your hearts are into Mercurys (except KK who's heart is clearly seated). Anyway I've attached scans of two of my favorite proof dimes. Both well toned with some cameo contrast...
  • DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wow Carl, pretty coins. I do like Barbers too. Even collect Roosey's because they are dimes, and they are pretty when in this condition.

    Jon
  • Thanks Jon.

I love proof Mercurys too. It is just that it is so hard to find them with perfect mirrors for fields, especially with a little cameo contrast. I would pay extra for a Merc that looked like my Barber or Roosey. A lot extra! I did pay extra for my latest Merc, image link below.

Wow, another beautiful coin carl. Did that one get a CAM designation? I don't know if I have ever seen a proof Merc with cam on the holder.

  • gripgrip Posts: 9,962 ✭✭✭✭✭

The proof merc is outstanding as well as the Barber,I cant get excited about Rosyimage.Al
  • Well, Al, that is a very special Roosey. For one thing it was minted in my birth year image I guess I am a natural type collector, I like them all!

That Merc isn't frosted enough for the cameo designation. Several Mercs have gotten that designation recently though I haven't seen one yet...

    Carl,

There's a 1940 Merc in PR65CAM in Wednesday's Teletrade auction. It looks like it has good mirrors, and just a bit of haze.
