Received my 5 "Unopened" 1964 Proofs Today...

Opened the first 4 and there was nothing spectacular. I looked at the 5th and was mad because it was clearly opened. The flap was opened and you could see the outlines of the coins on the envelope because they were not between the cardboard inside. I look at the coins and to my surprise is one of those beautiful bluish/lavender nickels. I have one already from a 1961 set and now I have one from a 1964 set. I am trilled because I think they look great. Here are a couple small photos and if you want to look at the really big ones click the link. Maybe give me a grade opinion on the nickel. Thanks a bunch!

Nice Jeff. Besides the pretty toning, it looks like a nice clean piece with good surfaces.

  • SWEEEEET! image VERY nice Jeffs.

I recently got 15 "unopened" sets - no such luck.
I was also amazed at how many fibers and bits of paper and such that adhered to the "original" glue between the flap and the envelope throughout the years, somehow making their way in between.

    Any AH Kennedys?
  • Not that I can tell. I have such a hard time telling a AH from a normal one. I use Russ's link to the nice photos but that doesn't help me much. I will just have to buy one from ebay or something for a reference I guess. Until then I will just keep all the sets.

    Thanks for the imput.

  • Sometimes they're tough. The AH can completely disappear depending on the angle the coin is viewed from.
I got a firsthand example of that yesterday. It's astonishing.

If you look at the coin with the right-hand side angled away from you slightly (20 degrees or so) the AH stands out like a neon sign.
go the other direction, and it vanishes. image
  • I've got an AH in a NGC PF68 holder that I have a heck of a time seeing the accented hair on. It's there, just tough to spot at most angles. The truncated serif on the I is real clear, though.

    Edit:
Almost forgot... that Jefferson is very, very nice!
