I found an "unclad" 1995 lincoln in my bucket o change

How can I grade this coin? What do I need to look for?

Is the terminology correct?

In case you're still wondering what the heck I'm talking about, I found what appears to be a modern lincoln with no copper on it.

Thanks.
Give me your good change please. I'll take it from here, nurse.

  • I've seen a few of those - you might want to send it to ANACS if you feel it's genuine.

It is called unplated. The zinc planchets are plated with bronze.
The original unplated struck zinc coins WERE worth about $125.
Don't get too excited though cause there is a kit on the market that removes the copper plating.
Kind of killed the market in these types of "errors".
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

    Dont get to excited ?

I found the same thing and funny exactly the same date? I dont collect errors, so I thought I had finally found a cent with the missing copper plating, turned out to be done with a chemical.

It was a good job whoever did it.

  • Can you post a pic of yours since I dont have a digital camera yet.

Did you pay to get your bad news or did someone u know tell you?

Can the average collector make the destinction? How?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I'm very curious.

You can't tell the difference between circulated black ones and altered ones. Collectors go for uncirculated where the trick is to look for the mint luster, that little band of light that goes round & round like the stagecoach wheel turning backward in the old western movies when you tilt & rotate the coin a little bit, to determine authenticity. Post mint alterations have no such luster because it was on the plating that was removed.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

"The zinc planchets are plated with bronze"

Actually, some 1982 cents and all post-1982 cents have a plating of pure copper.
