Sacagawea Error missing its "gold" Color

I was wondering if anyone has seen a Sacagawea that is missing its gold color? My wife picked one up at work and at first I thought she was joking. But, it is silver and you can even see its copper stripe.

Just curious if anyone has run across a similar coin. Thank you!

Jim

Is it on an SBA planchet?

  • I wish mine was UNC, but my wife got it out of the change machine at work. The edges are not reeded, so I can only assume it is on the correct planchet. I will get scans in a few minutes.

  • Here are some scans

  • I thought at first maybe it was worn off too, but I dipped the coin and it turned more silver than gold. Many of the other Sac's we've gotten out of the machine were dirty like an old penny.

That does not look like a wrong planchet... more likely odd toning/corrosion. The reeding on the edge does not com from the planchet, it is created when the coin is struck via the collar aroung the planchet.

Sounds to me that it's on a Susan B Anthony planchet. If so nice find. Edited: from the scans, doesn't look like the wrong planchet

    Bikingnut,
Check the scans... I've never seen a copper-nickel clad coin that color. I don't think it's an SBA planchet.

Based on the scans, it still does have some gold color to it, so it is NOT on an SBA planchet, although if it was, it would be a VERY nice find! One of the board members found a 199 SBA on a 25 cent planchet out of the mint set! Anyway, your coin looks to me like it has been around the block once or twice. image Richard.

I have to think it's altered. (plated).

  • Looks like it didnt get the gold layering and the goldish color is copper under the worn off silver layer. Is that possable?

  • Sinctered(sp) planchet? Planchets were annealed in the furnace after a batch of copper nickel clad planchets were processed and the coppernickel dust was fused to the planchet. It would leave a very thin silver colored layer on the coin that would quickly wear away on the high areas allowing the golden color to show through. That would be very much like what the scans are showing.
