It was indeed issued in 1980, and there was also an 18-card set in 1979. I don't have my football annual here with me at work, but if memory serves these were discs from the bottom of slurpee cups, or something like that. I know they're pretty inexpensive.
There were 2 Stop-n-Go football sets put out in 1979 and 1980...Stop-n-Go is a gas/food mart chain that operated in the south (primarily)
They are 3-D cards.
Manufactured by Xograph (later known as Sportflics).
The 1979 set consists of 18 cards, with the #6 Payton and # 12 Staubach cards being the most expensive cards (about $20 ea.) BV is about $60.00 for the set.
The 1980 set consists of 48 cards, with quite a few $4 - $6 cards making up most of the set...Harris, Greene, and Griese to name a few. BV is about $40.00 for the set.
Cards in both sets were rectangle (2 1/8" X 3 1/4 ")
Cards were heavy with Texas team players.
Individual cards were given out as a gift with purchase of a soft drink at the stores.
I know that a pretty large number of these sets were assembled by the Dallas area card dealers (First Base Sportscards comes to mind)
Hope that helps.
(I'd love to have about 100 sets!!!)
