Validations on Monday

Today the judges will be reviewing all sets in the Registry and determining the PSA Set Registry award winners. Therefore, no sets will be validated until Monday to allow the judges ample time to make their nominations. We appreciate your patience until then.

Thanks to all who are participating in the PSA Set Registry program. We really appreciate your business and your enthusiasm!

Although I am not going to win anything (this year), the registry awards are a great asset to a great hobby. Keep up the good work PSA!

    BJ,
I managed to jump Shane on the '54 wilson franks set and have a question for you.
Mastro has their phenomenal set ranked as the current and all-time #1. Acording to various sources their intention is to sell it off in parts in the big december auction. Is'nt this a case where the set should be retired from current status?? I really could care less about a certificate (unless it has some free grades attached) and imagine that Shane will be doing all he can to jump back over me within a few days, as he did on the '71 Greatest Moments (quite a little battle we had, but I expected him to win)image

    murcerfan,

Mastronet's set will be dropped from current as soon as it is sold. As long as they are not advertising that the set is for sale in the registry, they are listing within our rules.

I wish that the timing was more to your advantage, as I appreciate the work you have put into your collection.

BJ - While you are reading this thread I have a question too! I just purchased a 1960 Mayrose Franks FB set, the set was the #2 (of 2) highest set listed, w/ a Mastro set being #1. The seller of my set is listed in the All Time Finest at #2 (I'm at #3 since I am in the process of updating 1 card) Upon completion of that card, say I decide to sell or trade my set off. And another buyer lists it, so the 1 set will be listed in 3 different slots of the All Time Finest? This will give the impression that theres more of the cards out there then there is. And Mastro's may obviously be sold within time too!, so I'm sure the new owner will register that one also. So now the only 2 sets assembled will compile 5 slots in the All Time Finest category. Am I correct in this assumption...jay

    Jay-

I believe you are right in your thinking. The process is flawed in that respect. A collector could really put the screws to someone and stroke his/her own ego by transferring the set to 4 other individuals thus taking up the top 5 spaces. Is this likely to happen...who knows? My opinion is that this issue of selling complete sets to different owners and having each one have slot as "all-time greatest" goes against the spirit of the registry. In the future more and more complete graded sets will be sold thus increasing the possibility of conflicts.

John - You bring up some valid points. So much so, that I don't see any benefit in having a current and an All Time list. A set that is current and in 1 piece is the only viable thing that is in place, not a set that has transferred hands or picemealed into other sets...jay

    John and Jay:

I would generally agree with your comments with one exception.

Say the number one set is broken up and added to several other sets in the registry. After the dust settles, the set broken up is still the highest rated set to ever be put together. It would be of interest to me to know what has been the highest rated set put together to date, current or retired.

One possible solution to all this is to have only one Set Registry list as was suggested, with a notation as to whether each set listed is active or retired.

In this way, collectors could identify how many active sets are in existence, eliminating the problem described earlier in this thread.

    Jay:

I really like seeing some of the older sets of the past that have since been broken up. I think it is at least somewhat important to understand which cards were where and when. It also helps answers questions about provenance -- which can sometime be a useful marketing tool. (How many people still sell things as "ex-Halper", or in the baseball card world, you often see people selling a T206 that is from the "Harris" Collection).

On the same token -- I understand the concerns that you are bringing up with the same set being sold over and over again. I think that there should still be a current and an all-time finest list, however I suggest maybe it be tweaked. Here are my suggestions:

    Either:

    a) If a set is substantially the same (e.g., 90% or more), consolidate everything into one set -- with a little narrative at the top showing the set history. Something like "Mr. X owned this set until 12/31/01. Eventually, Jay of Qualitycards took over the set and upgraded the following five cards. From there, Jay sold the set, and eventually Mr. Y owned this set. He upgraded the following 9 cards from Jay's set", etc. etc.

    or

    b) When a set is retired -- show the PSA Serial numbers of cards that were in that set. That way you can see if a card has been registered in more than one set. The only downside of that is that I don't know if PSA would want the Serial numbers of formerly-registered cards necessarily known to the public...

Steve - Marc ...I like your ideas addressing this situation, and I think something should be done, although its not a major priority, just something of concern...jay

I saw this one coming and recently retired and broke up a respectible, yet not amazing set.
It was a vintage set ('69 supers) that I finally broke the 9.0 set rating barrier with. I'm somewhat proud of this set as it was carefully built over the past 5 years and had over a dozen psa 10's, it took some effort and I took the time to register it. I would like to keep some record of the "accomplishment" rather than being wiped out. Ironically I sold out to two of the guys behind one of whom will leapfrog me and the other likely will someday (right, Marshall)

I believe the current division of current vs. all-time is OK. I think that in time, it will be understood that the all-time sets were a "snapshot" of a particular set at the time. Eventually only the "current" sets will entirely meaningful. I think it would be good to add some statistical data to registered set like the date of inception (with % complete) and date of retirement. This could certainly make obvious the sets that are being manipulated (as mentioned above)
Perhaps another idea would be to create a page for registrants, sort of like the e-bay "me" page in which collectors could chose to link all thier current sets and profile sets they have built and retired (including the kind of providence Schmidty mentioned above).
