split grades/ cleaning

If I have a coin which grades vf obverse, and vg reverse, do the grading companies call it a vg, or vf, or fine? Also why do grading companies slab older coins that have been cleaned (1700's) but bodybag newer ones. Thanks, Mark

The ones that do slab cleaned will net grade it. It depends on the circumstances to what degree they'll net grade. Technical grading uses the obv/rev split grades but all slab companies are market graders to some extent so you won't see it.

Oh, in answer to your other question it is because many coins were cleaned as a regular "conservation" procedure in the 1700s and 1800s and 1900s and 2000s. But it's acceptible to some extent on older coins because almost all have been cleaned to some degree. Some better than others.
