She was contacting the winning bidders and telling them to send payment to her. EBAY DID NOTHING! They said no crime was committed.

Since when has stealing other people's money been a crime?

  • 60 Minutes II hasn't been giving their targets much time to respond lately. I bet they draw some blood tonight. I'll watch as long as they hold my interest.

PayPal is the worst. I got ripped off and because I waited 31 days to report it to PayPal (their user agreement says 30 days) they told me sorry.

So I just had my credit card company do a charge back and boy did that get PayPal all upset. They permentaly suspended my account and froze all my funds. Then they said they would un-freeze it if I paid them the charge-back.image

I had to explain that I wasn't going to be a victim of wire fraud followed by extortion.

Because I also use their service when selling, I think they met the legal definition of extortion since they were harming my business unless I paid. I also turned off my PayPal settings on my current auction and was getting complaints from buyers that they couldn't use their credit card to pay like it displayed in the ad, so I forwarded those emails to them saying I'd pay anything they wanted if they would quit hurting my business.

They came around to my way of thinking and reinstated my permentaly closed account, but after that I don't keep much money in the account.

They're all a bunch of weasels.

Have you looked into Citibank's C2it? They charge no fees for domestic balance transfers from bank accounts. They also allow for credit card payments. You sure don't hear any complaints about them. Seems that is ALL you hear about PayPal!

    DCAM -

I've used it to pay some auctions that didn't take PayPal and it was painless, but never tried it using it for selling. I'll have to go visit their site and get the details.

Free is a good thing. After ebay is done with me, the rest of my profit is split between Paypal and the post office - I'm just the middleman.

I don't think it has wide acceptance by public yet so dumping PayPal may drive away some buyers, but I don't know. I like the convience of on-line payments but not the expense. If I was smart, I'd only accept money orders.

It's a good idea and I think I'll try it. Thanks

I watched it. Nothing much at all about fraud just about how it's doing so well.

I tried to sign up on C2it but they did not accept special characters in the address line. My address has a # and a -, so they could not verify the credit card address...Duh

If more of us used C2it and said in our auction descriptions that we no longer offer PayPal, then it would become easier and easier to convince buyers to register for C2it where we get better treatment.

  • Personally, I think ebay does a good job for the most part. It is quite a bit to expect them to watch everyone who uses it. Remember that one of the main reasons for ebays popularity is that anyone can join and start buying or selling almost immediately. What if ebay made you fill out a bunch of forms and send them in, and then they could check you out (at least if you planned to sell), and they made you have certain state licenses to sell anything, etc. It may be a bit safer then, but not nearly as popular. It is funny however that it wasn't considered a crime since no payment was sent. That sounds like a bank robber who doesn't get any money not being charged!

I'll have to disagree with you. They do very little to resolve problems. They don't do much about sellers that mislead, lie, and commit fraud. It takes them forever to get rid of a bad seller. There have been many posts about"BAD" Ebay sellers,as well you know if you've been around here since 2001.How many times have we,collectively informed Ebay about sellers or auctions that need their attention? To many for me to count.Look at the ones that they do manage to kick off, that return under another name.

Interview of the ceo and founder of eBay.
Discussion and demonstration of how eBay works-bidding-selling.
    Interview with some eBay sellers.
Questions about why eBay is so successful when other online businesses are failing.
Questions on how eBay compares to k-mart and other major retailers.
Showing eBay power sellers at a eBay gathering last year.

    Summary:
The whole eBay section on 60 mins II was like a big ad for eBay and how great it is.

I thought it was interesting that eBay claims only 30 transactions in a million "go bad" (i.e the Seller rips off the Buyer). That seems like an exaggeration to me.

  • Truth about eBay is that the story about the founder starting it to sell her surplus Beanie Babies is all a lie. It was the idea of her publicist to promote it as that to get people to sell goods online. I think it was clever but they continue to say that's how it got started. Meg Whitman never collected Beanies!

eBay remains the Wild West of buying collectibles online. I know my friend's grand daughter was making money hand over fist on ebay. When the parents asked her how she told them she was selling Britney Spears autographs...only problem was she she signing the autographs herself and comitting a fraud. She had already collected over $2,000 from all over the country in money orders and cash before mummy and pappy put a stop to it. Now I am sure there are adults out there doing the same but no mom and dad to police them!

I was using Billpoint (eBay payments) exclusively. ebay keeps sending nasty emails telling me to switch to paypal before service is discontinued (sometime early next year.) they even took out all the credit card pics from my auctions, grr... and you can't filter searches by items taking billpoint payments anymore... and the lock icon is gone from all the listings. figure if I have to go through all this trouble, might as well look at the alternatives image so decided I could use the extra 2% and switched to c2it instead image

  • Don, you have to understand. Ebay can't just go kicking people off even if a group of people complains. They could easily be sued if they don't investigate properly, and that takes a lot of resources. They certainly don't want to end up in court having thrown a dealer off ebay, and not have a bunch of evidence they are certain of. What if 5-10 users got together for fun or whatever to complain about some big ebay seller and he was thrown off and later it was all found to be bogus. They could fake alot of stuff, and ebay would have to spend alot of time and effort to look into it properly. Granted, there are many bad ebayers, but for ebay to go investigate a bunch of them, they would have to raise their fees bigtime. Do shopping malls guarantee no stores ever rip off customers? I don't think so.

  • JJacks, Ebay is a legitimate business that earns money and should be held with some of the responsiblity and liability of the fraud that occurs in its domain. They could do a better job at policing and investigating reports, but because this is a publicy traded company, that kind of activity would certainly affect the bottom line along with the stock price and the pockets of the upper deck managers.
  • One thing they never talk about is the dollar value of that 30 out of a million transactions gone bad. Are they $5 Beanie Babies or are they $5000 computers, coins, stamps, etc.

I am sure the number is much higher but many do not complain. What about those ripped off and dont realize it till much later if ever? Take a look at the autographs up for auction, I estimate 90% of the Kobe Bryant autographs are fake or machine made. My son owns a real one which he has the phot shaawing Kobe signing and it does not look like anything on ebay.
  • Dan Rather will be talking about how this company got started and how much money their making.I don't believe he will talked about the crazy fees they have, computer generated questions and answeres for the users(meaning 99% of the time you can't speak to a real person about the problems that exist on E-Bay.)
Example: One of those power sellers had over 7000 feed backs with 160+negatives.That means 160+ buyers got screwed.E-Bay really does'nt give a crap about the buyers.I could go on and on about E-Bay.It kills me to buy or sell on it.Rather is going to be very easy on them.WATCH.
