Which service to submit to

I am going to send in a few coins for grading. 1796 and 1798 large cents maybe ag on both. 1803 bust half fine-vf, never cleaned, and a 1882-S morgan, maybe a 65, 1 tic on the cheek. I have submission forms for both pcgs and anacs. I was leaning towards anacs because I heard they go further when it comes to varities. Is this right? thanks, Mark

I hear PCGS is pretty hard on copper, so maybe ANACS or NGC is a better choice.

(BTW - If somebody tells you to dip your coins first - skip down to the next response).

I have to agree, the early coppers should definitely go to ANACS.The others to PCGS.IMHO

  • ANACS probably won't attribute uness you ask them to. If you send them in with the attributions they will confirm them and place it on the holder. PCGS will not do this.

call me crazy, but if attributions are all that matters, segs is a good choice.

I second the SEGS (which becomes my favorite service now) I just got a batch of ten coins back, I asked for atribution on a couple of them and they attributed ALL of them (some of them have even double attribution (Breen and WB) - almost all of them were crossovers (read crackouts) and I'm very happy with the results. The onlt thing is you have to put attribution yourself or you'll end up paying more.
  • ANACS attributes....but I think you have to pay extra for it...

The only problem with SEGS is the resale value. ANACS has a much better resale value and IMO SEGS is just one notch above AGC. Bought a proof morgan in a SEGS holder and PCGS body bagged it and ANACS net graded it for alteration. SEGS graded it a solid PR64. Stick with ANACS!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • ANACS is a better choice in this case IMHO. I don't think ANACS charges for the attribution itself, just the attribution research. So if you already know the variety they will confirm and note it on the holder. Otherwise you have to pay to have them research what variety it is for you.

hey madmarty, not going to disagree w/ you ,but that's why i suggested segs if ONLY attribution is wanted. briggs has one he11uva good eye for it.
