What does "FS-003" designation mean?

I just got a 1865 CN 3c back from ANACS that has the designation of FS-003 on it. I am pretty sure I asked for attribution service on this one image But I am not sure.

  • Not entirely sure, but I did find an obscure (to me, anyway) attribute, FS# (FS1-FS?) -- Fivaz and Stanton number (19xx). Die variety - many series

The FS number is a designation to a system created by Bill Fivas and J.T. Stanton (hence FS) and published in the many various editions of the "Cherrypicker's Guide" available in many places online for around $25. I hope this answers your question.

Sorry, I spelled Bill's last name wrong...Fivas should be "Fivaz"...Libertad had it right.

If you get it from the author's site (here) you could ask him to sign it.

The 3 cent is a repunched date (very strong) - according to the Cherry Picker's Guide it also has strong clashed dies. A very interesting variety. Nice find!

The repunching is to the south of the primary date. From the picture in the "Guide" the 865 is very nicely repunched, with it showing less on the 1.

    From the book:

Very strong repunched date, with secondary image south of the primary. All four numerals are clearly repunched. Also shows strong
    clashed dies. Estimated value XF - $75, MS63 - $150.

[From looking at the photo in the book, the repunching is not very evident on the "1", but strong on the other three digits.]

    EDIT: Pushkin beat me! image

I just received the same coin back, with the same designation!!! Mine came back vf/35. It's a neat repunching that is very obvious to the naked eye.
